Both mine have already had it - it was no big deal for us. Oddly enough, they caught it from the doctor's office! My oldest had an icky habit of licking chairs and such when she was younger *blech*

We do that pretty frequently, at least three times a year. We have a cat door though that allows him to go in and out. We leave about 5 dishes of food and two bowls of water for him.

In my experience it is very normal to breastfeed publically. I live in BC and have also lived in Alberta and never had issues. I nursed my oldest until she was 2.5 and did a lot of it in public too....
