It absolutely gets easier! Sooner than you think they'll be old enough to gently boot outside or to another room while you get a few things done, and most kids enter a stage when they want to help...

Oral infections can get nasty; a system-wide infection would be harder on you...

My neighbor just mentioned today that her 12 yo still sleeps with her; I've known him since he was 3 and never knew it. He's one of the most well adjusted kids I know. :)
