I recommend 3-4 dozen diapers - good to have a bit more than needed than to run out! I always used pf's though so the expense wasn't high.
I also had at least 10 covers in each size.

I used them a bit with my 2 youngest. Can't beat the price. You may need a doubler with them and the velcro ones didn't fit my wide 9+lb newborn very well but they do hold in bf poo pretty darn well!

I use them in my pocket dipes as inserts. You can use them as a doubler too but I'd put flannel or something over it so they don't touch baby's skin - they feel kind of funky.
