Until you can sew something folded wash cloths can work. I've also heard of people using cotton socks. Since there is no fastener, you have to hold on or it will fall in the toilet.

I made mine with 4 layers of t shirt and one of flannel. They are quite absorbent. If I'm worried about leaks I fold up a baby wash cloth and add it on the inside to increase absorbancy.

Crazyms, I like gladrags because they wash and dry easily. I like that i can customize the absorbancy. I also love the size of the night pads because they cover so much and i dont worry about leaks...

Some of the IKEA cribs are solid wood except for the mattress base (at least in the US.) You might be able to replace it, although IKEA uses low emission glues.
