Homeschooling

Naomi Aldort

I enjoy reading you open perspective on various topics and would like to learn more about your thoughts on homeschooling and state requirements. Do you have any suggestions on homeschooling "your child's way" and meeting state requirements for curriculum and record keeping? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Dear Parent,

How wonderful for your child and for you. Homeschooling “your child’s way” nurtures the child’s innate talents and aspirations; the child stays deeply connected to himself and therefore pursuing his path without being distracted by needing to live up to the expectations of others. He can stay authentic and optimize his learning and his social connections which, paradoxically, helps him to be less self-centered and more socially aware and caring. Not needing to defend his position in a competitive social setup, allows a child to feel at ease with other children and people of all ages.

Being with the family is the best social training because the child connects on a deep level, with people who love him. He learns to relate based on care rather than competition, and with abundance rather than scarcity of love and attention. As he grows older his social experiences expand to include a full society. Rather than be isolated in school, away from real multi age social experiences, he gets to immerse with family and society. These children are often very confident in relating to adults because they never see them as the intimidating authority in the first place.

The best resource I offer is my set of 7 CDs, Trusting Our Children, Trusting Ourselves. In this set you will hear my keynotes at the first “Rethinking Education” conference and it will answer most of your questions.

As for your state rules, you should inquire on line with your local homeschooling group, or with your local school. Some states require almost nothing, other ask that you let the school district know that you home school, and more strict states ask for some reporting on what your child is learning. However, even in these states, learning can be child lead.

Learning occurs all the time. There is no such a thing as a “not learning” brain. Many self-directed children help in the kitchen (chemistry), measure and count (math), travel (geography and social studies,) do art and crafts, music, theater etc. Yet, the greatest learning occurs through play about which you can read here:

If you need more specific answers to questions, you can set up a phone session with me, or offer your question in the next teleclass. To book a phone session:  http://naomialdort.com/guidance.html
