Breastfeeding in Public 1919

I believe the mother sitting on the bench whose face is partially blocked and is sitting in front of the tree is breastfeeding in public, but I can’t be absolutely sure. What do you think?

I agree, it looks to me like she is breastfeeding. Thank you for starting this blog I look forward to other photos and images you discover.

One question I have is are these mothers nursing or nannies “wet nurses”? The fancy buggies and little girl in bows and frills makes me wonder if maybe some of these women might be hired by rich families. Any thoughts?

  3. Jennifer says:

Great observation! These ladies are probably the nannies and wet nurses of these children. Judging by how plainly clothed the women are compared to the children, I would say you’re right!

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I completely missed that important detail.
