A: Sorry to hear about your significant and mysterious pain. It is very difficult to give advice on this over the internet, and I am also unsure about the nature of your pain, and what investigations you have had.

I would guess that serious conditions have been ruled out, and that no blood has been found in your urine in any test, which would make kidney stones unlikely.

Some studies have suggested that the normal changes that occur to your body in pregnancy, including important changes in the function of your kidneys that help you to adapt to your growing baby, can trigger kidney-type pain (“renal colic”), which may explain your problem

I suggest you discuss this in depth with your midwife. You could ask her to refer you to a medical specialist to look into this more if it is still troubling you.

If medical approaches do not help, you may want to check in with a practitioner of alternative and complementary medicine, eg an acupuncturist. Seek a practitioner who is experienced in treating pregnant women: again, ask your midwife for a referral.
