Santa Fe, New Mexico - The Western Publications Association (WPA) announced last Friday the 2006 winners of the 55th Maggie Awards, the most prestigious magazine publishing awards in Western States. Mothering magazine won again! Mothering magazine and Peggy O’Mara received the award for Best Signed Editorial, “Breastfeeding in Whose Public?,” which originally appeared in the September–October 2005 issue. For decades, Peggy O’Mara, publisher and editor of Mothering, has been a trusted resource for parents. Breastfeeding in public is a pivotal issue that Mothering has covered for nearly ten years. Despite a few sensational exceptions in the media, research shows that the vast majority of people support public breastfeeding. The winning editorial can be found on www.mothering.com. The Maggies, known as the “the Oscars of the magazine industry,” received more than 2000 entries representing 400 magazines. A total of 86 Maggies were handed out at the awards banquet held on April 21, 2006, in Los Angeles. The awards encompass both consumer and trade magazines, with categories ranging from political issues to alternative lifestyles. The full list of Maggie Award winners, finalists, and categories is available online at www.wpa-online.org. Mothering magazine won the Maggie award in previous years for Best Public Service Seriesin 1995 for articles on escaping domestic violence and in 2005 for articles on mercury in childhood vaccinations.
