Mothering Magazine Publishes Second Annual Pregnancy Edition

Santa Fe, New Mexico - Mothering magazine offers articles that will inspire and help mothers-to-be walk confidently through their pregnancy and embrace its wonder.

If the idea of a cutesy baby party makes you shudder, take a look at "Not Your Everyday Baby Shower." Beth Osnes invites you to eschew traditional schmaltz for something more meaningful—a ceremony that acknowledges the significance of becoming a mother.

Whether or not a baby shower seriously concerns you, diet probably does; most expectant moms start to read up on it right away. In "Sensuous Food for the Mother-to-Be," Cynthia Lair says to put down the books and trust your senses. In "Power Up Your Diet," Kimber Pasquali agrees: colorful, vibrant foods usually come packed with a bunch of nutrition.

Stacy Escoffery, author of "VBAC Victory!," overcame her anxiety by affirming her belief in her body's ability to give birth vaginally—even after a cesarean.

"What if we all spoke of childbirth in positive terms?" wonders Alyssa Colton in "The Language of Birth." How would our understanding of childbirth be affected? So many people talk about labor pain, so few about labor pleasure.

One of the most beautiful experiences of new motherhood is bonding with your child. The postpartum practice of lying-in helped Katherine Gyles, author of "At Rest in the Arms of the Mother," to deeply attach to her babies. After the birth of each of her two children, she spent five days in the bed, five days on the bed, and five days around the bed—a powerful experience of intimacy.

Besides the psychological benefits, lying-in comes with a practical perk: it facilitates breastfeeding. In "The Baby Knows How to Breastfeed," lactation expert Kittie Frantz details how just as babies are built to bond, they are also built to feed. We feature amazing screen shots from her DVD, First Attachment, that illustrate a baby finding her way to a breast and latching on —without guidance.

While breastfeeding and bonding are two joys of parenting, most agree that diapering is not. However, our choices in this arena are crucial to our environment, says Peggy O'Mara in "A Tale of Two Diapers." If you don't think cloth diapers are your thing, read her incisive editorial. It may change your perspective.
