Rick Hanson is a clinical psychologist who works with mothers, fathers, and children. He is the first author of the only comprehensive book about how to take good care of women and couples when kids come along: Mother Nurture: A Mother's Guide to Health in Body, Mind, and Relationships (Penguin, 2002).

The book grew out of his experience seeing his wife, Jan - an acupuncturist and nutritionist, and co-author of Mother Nurture - get increasingly depleted while conventional doctors acted like becoming a mother had made no difference in her life. And it is based on a complete review of the research literature on the effects of becoming a mother. He firmly believes that being a parent is just about the most profound and fulfilling thing a person can do. He and Jan raised their kids in an attachment framework, and she nursed each child for several years (often in tandem).

But parenthood also brings many challenges, and learning to cope with them skillfully can only help a parent be at her best with the children, stay energetic and healthy, and nourish teamwork and intimacy with her mate.

The father of two teenagers, Dr. Hanson is a frequent speaker before parent groups, and the lead author of a monthly column that appears widely on parenting websites and in the newsletters of parent-related organizations. You can see his past columns at www.NurtureMom.com.

A summa cum laude graduate of UCLA before earning his doctorate from the Wright Institute, he had a background as a management consultant prior to becoming a therapist. He also sits on the Board of Spirit Rock Meditation Center and teaches meditation. These influences help his advice be scientifically sound, practical, and peaceful.

Rick's personal interests include hiking, rock-climbing, meditation, reading and watching movies, and having fun with his kids.
