For My Son, Trapped Within

The world is too much for you,
and your screams are too much for me,
so I walk.

Soles slapping the sidewalk,
tunes blasting in my ears,
eyes blurred by liquid fear

until the aching weariness takes me home

and one night when I stood to leave
you asked to come along

and so we walked hand in hand
soles slapping the sidewalk

and you showed me the first star of the night.
