Stories of women giving birth on the way to the hospital are not unheard of. This one, however, is beyond exceptional.
When Alexis Swinney and her husband, Dominique, woke up on the morning on September 5th, they expected that the day had arrived to welcome their fifth child to the family. As this was not Swinney’s first birth, she knew that the ongoing contractions and discomfort throughout the night likely meant that she would soon meet her new little girl.
The 25-year-old Texas mom and her family packed into the car and headed straight for her midwife’s office, but not before dropping their 7-year-old off at school. A quick visit with the midwife revealed that Swinney was already seven centimeters dilated and well on her way to delivering her youngest child. The midwife helped Swinney back into the car, instructing her to ride facing backward on her knees for comfort during the short 10 to 15-minute ride to the hospital.
With her husband at the helm, Swinney tried to manage the excruciating pain. However, when her water broke, she knew that she would not be able to make it to the hospital. With her three sons in the backseat of the car, Alexis delivered their baby girl right in the passenger seat of the moving vehicle. Amazingly, per Swinney’s earlier request, her husband was able to record the entire thing all while driving to the hospital.

There was something beyond special, about getting to deliver my own baby. No doctors or nurses, no lights, or busy people, no one interrupting a moment that should be the most special moments for families as they bring life into the world. The pain was there, but the joy and peace that followed in those minutes we got to spend alone with our sweet girl was more rewarding then anything I could have asked for. I honestly think that God allowed me to deliver safely in the car, instead of making it to the hospital, because He knew that my desire for a birth that was without interruption and full of hormones between baby and I, that desire was so deep. And something that the hospital just couldn’t provide for me. People are shocked and often apologize that I didn’t make it to the hospital. They don’t understand that I just experienced something unrivaled to anything I could have imagined. I witnessed my body take over and a baby be born into my hands. My body is not swollen, and I have no tears. I had my husband and children around me, and for 5 minutes, we embraced everything that happened without any interruption. Our family has preferred a unique chaos It was crazy. But it was Amazing. @birthtube @birthwithoutfear @gracedinbirth @mindfulbirthproject @empoweredbirthproject
“I wasn’t nervous at all about the car moving because I honestly didn’t feel it moving,” Swinney told People Magazine. “My husband wasn’t driving crazy. I told him to drive a little fast, but to make sure we were safe!”
The healthy baby girl, named Corbyn Hope, is already well-loved by her four older siblings.
Swinney later posted the video on her Instagram page, revealing that she had wanted to have an unmedicated, uninterrupted birth surrounded by just her family. Elated to have delivered her own baby, she writes, “People are shocked and often apologize that I didn’t make it to the hospital. They don’t understand that I just experienced something unrivaled to anything I could have imagined. I witnessed my body take over and a baby be born into my hands. My body is not swollen, and I have no tears. I had my husband and children around me, and for 5 minutes, we embraced everything that happened without any interruption.”

We are so so humbled. You guys have no idea! We don’t deserve any of this and we surely are not going to take it for granted. We are so thankful to all the people who put work into having us on this show! We are so thankful for family who helped us all day long! (@ashlie.rebecca) Chrysler didn’t even hesitate when they were asked to help out, and the film crew for Jimmy Kimmel was awesome. Everyone was so cool and we honestly had no clue what they were really up to. Our kids behaved so well, given that we were filming all day long and barely had time for lunch. It was all such a cool experience, we are so blessed to have this inspiring story to tell, and so humbled that all of you guys are showing so much love. We just want to say thank you 💕💕 @jimmykimmel @jimmykimmellive
Swinney’s Instagram post has garnered nearly 66,000 views in the past two weeks. After hearing of the birth, Jimmy Kimmel interviewed the family on his show, gifting them a brand-new minivan. The family, grateful for the gesture, started a GoFundMe account to pay off their existing vehicle so that they may gift it to another family in need.
