5 Fun Drinks for the Kids to Sip on this Summer

Here are five fun summer drinks for your kidsHydration is especially important during the hot summer months. And whew, boy…has it been hot this summer! Here are a few fun summer drinks that are relatively healthy and your kiddos will be excited to sip on!

While water is certainly the beverage of choice for children to drink, in my experience, mixing in a little variety motivates my son to stay hydrated in the sweltering summer heat. Read below for  five favorite summer drinks.

1. Natural Homemade Root Beer

Add 1 tablespoon organic sasparilla to 1.5 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cover and continue to boil for approximately 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and add 2 teaspoons anise seeds and a cinnamon stick. Let the brew steep for another 10 minutes and then strain. Add a splash of chilled seltzer water and enjoy!

Make it a root beer float with ice cream or frozen yogurt for a special treat!

2. Watermelon Coolers

Blend 4 cups of cold chopped watermelon with the juice of a fresh lime and 1/2 cup water. If your children are up for it, this drink is tasty with a few mint or basil leaves added in (purée until the herbs are green flecks in the blender).

3. Sun Tea

This drink idea incorporates a little bit of nature too! Fill a quart jar up with fresh herbs of your choice (we love to use lemon balm or mint), add plenty of filtered water, and screw on a lid. Place your jar in a sunny spot in the yard and let it soak up the sun for at least 6 hours. Strain the herbs out, add lemon or honey to taste, and then chill in the refrigerator until cool.

4. Water with Fruit Juice Ice Cubes

This idea is a great alternative to diluting juice. Fill ice cube trays with 100% juice and let freeze. Add 1-2 juice cubes to your child’s usual cup of water for a flavor boost. Your child will get the taste twist and value from the juice without as much sugar.

5. Pineapple Seltzer Spritzer

Combine 2 ounces 100% pineapple juice with lime seltzer water. You could easily experiment with other juice and seltzer flavor combinations as well. This is something fun to use with a SodaStream if you have one. Many mamas love that it gives ‘soda’ without all the junk. Pair it with organic syrups for your kids to have special drinks.
