As natural-minded mamas, we know the importance of good gut health in our bodies and the bodies of our families. But did you know that the key to happy, healthy dogs is also heavily dependent upon their gut health? That’s right–what you feed your dog and the quality of your dog’s gut and poop are just as important to them as yours is to you.
It’s no secret that the key to a healthy, happy body is a healthy, happy gut. Study after study after study shows that, and that’s why we focus so hard on making sure we get good probiotics and good foods into our bodies and the bodies of those we love.
And we sure love our furbabies, don’t we? So much so that we want them to be as healthy and happy as they can for as long as they’re with us.
The thing is, though, we may not be doing as right as we could by their guts. Their guts are not-so-surprisingly similar to ours, and what goes into our dogs’ body (and what comes out of it) is as important to them as it is to us.
Good Dog Gut Health: What Goes In Needs To Be Better For What Comes Out
What’s one of the sure-fire ways our clinicians can learn about the status and health of our gut? You guessed it—our poop. Think about how often your pediatrician asks you about your baby’s / child’s stool. They want to know shape. They want to know consistency and frequency and color and basically everything about it, including smell. Why? Because our poop tells a lot about us. It gives us information about nutrient absorption and hydration and good bacterial flora and more.
So goes it for our four-legged family members. A study done by Nestle Purina PetCare Company found that the microbiome of a dog is surprisingly similar to that of their human best friends. The dogs in the study were served commonly available dog food, and their poop was analyzed at the end of the four-week study period so researchers could map the gene content of the dogs’ microbiome. There was a 63% overlap between the microbiome of the dogs and those of our own human microbiome.
What does this mean, then, for our dogs? The same thing it means for us–what we put into our bodies directly affects the quality of the gut flora we have. While we may insist on organic fresh foods for our families to better our gut health, what can we do for our dogs? So often, even the higher-priced holistic dog foods we choose for them are manufactured to sit on shelves for a while, and don’t often take whole gut health into pictures. Sure, they’re great for nutritional content, but if our dog’s gut isn’t healthy, much is often for naught.
How To Ensure Good Dog Gut Health
Because I know that gut health is important, and I know the gut/poop connection, the reality is that just like for my family and myself, I want to make sure my dog’s poop tells a good tale. Our digestive systems digest foods, absorb minerals, nutrients and vitamins and weed out all the toxins and harmful bacteria that make us sick. That’s the same process for our dogs, and just like I look to good pre- and probiotics for myself, I thought to do the same for my dogs.

The thing is, just like for humans, there are a lot of gut supplements for dogs. The difference is that trying to figure out all the things my dogs need for their gut health was exhausting. Not long ago, I attended the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, on a quest for finding the best products for my dogs (and pets in general). That’s where I met Jim Finnigan, the creator of Bernie’s Perfect Poop and president of Bernie’s Best. Bernie’s Best is a company dedicated to improving the gut health of all dogs, and started with his own lovable family member, Bernie.
Jim told me that he and his wife worked hard to ensure the gut health of their kids was great, and in doing so, realized they might want to look at how to do so for their own dog. But Jim said they found combining good fiber, prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes for his dog was just about as exhausting as it was for his kids and he wanted to do something about it. Not to mention, finding and buying four separate supplements was super expensive. He decided he needed to create a product that incorporated all the necessary elements for good gut health into one easy-to-offer package, and Bernie’s Perfect Poop was born.
What Makes Bernie’s Perfect Poop So Perfect For Good Dog Gut Health?
I’ve been a dog lover my entire life. I’ve always loved animals, and as a pet mom, I’ve always tried to do right by them, particularly when it comes to keeping them healthy. But I didn’t even think past the fact that I spent a lot of money on incredible dog food, and Jim says that’s not uncommon for many pet parents who love their pets. The problem is that spending money on top-notch pet food may mean you’re just wasting money if your dog’s unhealthy gut steals all that beneficial nutrition.
That’s where it’s important to ensure you’ve got good fiber, prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes as part of your dog’s nutrition.
Just like for humans, fiber is the first and most important step of good gut health. And not just any fiber or roughage. Most dog foods have fiber in them, but they’re not all clean and green. Some dog foods (even high-dollar ones) include cellulose or other byproducts to add their fiber. Bernie’s says, “Just say, ‘No,’ to wood pulp,” and instead uses Miscanthus grass fiber as its primary ingredient. Miscanthus is an all-natural perennial grass that is responsibly farmed and sourced from local farmers in the midwest. It’s grain-free, gluten-free and non_GMO and Jim says that it shows excellent health results in studies. Additionally, Jim chose to use Miscanthus because of his commitment to the environment. Miscanthus captures carbon in its root system and doesn’t need to use pesticides or herbicides to thrive. He combines that with the superfood pumpkin and flax seeds and the fiber blend is just what your dog’s gut ordered.
When it comes to probiotics, they’re pivotal. They’re what line the GI tracts of our dogs, and helps keep them healthy. Bernie’s Perfect Poop uses strains that won’t die before they even get to your dog’s gut. Unfortunately, that’s what happens to even some of the better dog foods that tout probiotic ingredients. Jim uses spore-forming probiotics so they won’t be destroyed by your dog’s stomach acid or heat while being shipped to suppliers or your home. And while it’s little known outside of natural lifestyle circles, probiotics need live food too! Probiotics feed on prebiotics and are imperative to balancing your dog’s gut (as well as your own). Including them in Bernie’s Perfect Poop means less supplementing for you, but better gut health for your dog.
The inclusion of enzymes in Bernie’s Perfect Poop is just what your dog needs for better nutrition and absorption. The enzymes naturally help food break down better, and makes the food more available for natural absorption. They’re critical when you are paying top dollar for all the nutritional benefits of dog food, and they’re the final additive that helps create the perfect gut (and perfect poop). They also help reduce scaly or dry coats and hair, allergies, joint issues, obesity and more. With food being fuel, enzymes give the food their boost.
And let’s just be downright honest–these little bits that I sprinkle over my dogs’ food are so much less messy than pre- / probiotic powders are. Dogs think they’re getting treat toppers every day!
Good Dog Gut Health Means Better Health Overall
The reality of good dog gut health is that it means better health overall for your dog. A dog that has good dog gut health is less susceptible to disease and infection, as well as general health issues like bloat, bad breath, constipation, diarrhea, ear infections, allergies, wound healing, sleep regulation and more.
And while it’s important that the food we give our dogs fuels them as the food we eat fuels us, sometimes we overlook the digestive needs of our dogs because we think their food takes care of all they need. It doesn’t, but Bernie’s Perfect Poop combines the best of natural fibers, prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes together to give your dog the best gut health all-in-one supplement you’ll find. It comes in cheddar and chicken flavors your dog will find delicious and a treat itself, and it’s the easiest way in the world to ensure that your dog is getting the best nutrition you can give.
They say the only bad thing about dogs is that they leave us too soon. That’s true, but making sure we offer them clean and green supplements that benefit their health is the best way to keep them with us as long as we can. Digestive supplements make a huge difference in our lives, and in the lives of our dogs. Making Bernie’s Perfect Poop part of your dog’s daily routine is the way to go if you’re looking to build good dog gut health and happiness for your dog.
