Love is in the air, and it doesn't just smell like chocolates and roses!
No, today more families are considering Valentine's Day ideas that share the love not just individually, but within their communities and even their worlds.
And, if you're like us, and still love those yummy chocolates and are a sucker for fresh plants, that's cool too because there a ton of companies that offer eco-friendly gifts for members of the whole family!
Valentine's Day Another Hallmark Holiday?
Yes, St. Valentine was a real person, but just who he was sort of has some debate. According to BBC research, the most popular belief about St. Valentine is that he was a Roman priest from the third century.
He gained his notoriety as a lover of love when he arranged and performed secret marriages after Emperor Claudius II banned marriage. Believing that married men were better lovers than fighters, he banned marriage entirely. When the emperor found out that the priest decided love was worth fighting for, he jailed him and sentenced him to death.
The story didn't end there, though.
While in jail, Valentine fell in love with the daughter of the jailer, and on the day he was to be killed (you guessed it, February 14!), he sent her a last letter, signing it "From your Valentine."
Pass some time, and come to an ancient Roman festival in the middle of February. Lupercalia officially marked the beginning of springtime for them,
The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February - officially the start of their springtime. As part of the celebration, boys and girls would draw names from a festival box and during the festival times, would be 'betrothed.' Consider it old-school Valentine's Day cards, if you will.
Much like many of our modern-day holidays and traditions, the church wanted to merge the cultural festival celebration and remembrance of a Christian figure and St. Valentine became not only the official image for people expressing love, but in February, with many traditions still showing up today.
Valentine's Day Ideas For Today's Families
Obviously, like many 'holidays' out there, St. Valentine's expressions for the beauty of love have been a tad bit capitalized on in this day and age. Don't believe us? Check out the aisles at your favorite big-box store in mid-December-you'll already start seeing Red Hots and Conversation hearts for sale!
But that doesn't mean you celebrating has to reek of syrupy sweet buying of things just to say you're celebrating the day. Heck, in our house? We don't celebrate Valentine's Day (save with the typical stuff my son does with his class) because...well, lazy.
And not just lazy. Neither my husband nor I find that going big for Valentine's Day makes either of us feel any more loved (in fact, we're both stressed) and we prefer not buying things for the sake of buying them.
But that's how we do US.
If you're all about celebrating your loved ones on a special day just to do so? You go ahead and do it!
In fact, here are some neat and eco-friendly ways you can!
Three Sister's Apothecary Products
Look let's start with some self-love, shall we? We were lucky enough to come across Emma Mann, owner and soap artisan of Three Sister's Apothecary. Emma's been a Mothering mama for over 2 decades, and her journey of child loss and high-risk pregnancy put her on a path to make sure her family was as healthy and non-toxic as they could be. Emma says that Mothering encouraged her to see out clean and natural products, as well as alternative education settings like Waldorf and Montessori, and even set her on the path of natural products as a career!
Beginning with making her own products for her baby and family, she and her sister and niece are the creative energy behind some pretty amazing natural products. They select ingredients that come from nature and use them to clean, nourish and pamper our skin.
Some of our absolute favorites (for you or anyone you love) are the Rose & Coconut Bath Soak, the Mandarin Solid Hair Conditioner Bar, and the Eucalyptus & Arnica Muscle Rub. I have crazy curly hair, but that solid conditioner bar? Tames the frizz, made the curls pop and my hair felt so good. And, that Arnica muscle rub is incredible for everything from menstrual cramps to pulling a muscle when picking up Legos (yes, that happens).
Their entire line is clean and non-toxic, and keeps your whole house comfy and non-toxic too. Yep, even the furry family members! You can check out their Soapy Tails bars for your fur-babies. Clean and fresh smelling, your pets will love bathtime. Okay, maybe not love, but you will with how great they look and smell!
Earth Mama Organics
And while we're on the topic of loving yourself, Mama, don't forget to look into (or drop hints for) some more of our favorites. Earth Mama consistently shows the love to mamas and babies with their clean and organic care. For everything from gift sets for newborns to gift sets for new mamas, Earth Mama is there to help you love yourself.
We especially love their Lady Face daily tinted sunscreen stick. It's a contour, concealer and foundation that moisturizes and protects, all-in-one! You may not even think about how important it is to wear sunscreen on your face in these blustery, often-gray months, but that couldn't be further from the truth! Lady Face will also block blue light (ahem, like what you're most likely exposing yourself to right now) as well as UVA/UVB rays that exist despite the sun actually making an appearance. And, it's the first certified organic beauty product that is certified (NSF/ANSI 305--the organic personal care standard) and is SPF 40. It's a daily gift of love you're giving yourself and your family.
McCrea's Chocolates
So obviously, if you're a chocolate fan, Valentine's Day really could be your jam! And if that's the case, McCrea's award-winning caramels have got you covered! Consider gifting (or again, hinting for) a Valentine's Day Caramel Tasting Box. It comes with six pillow packs of top-rated caramels to be savored with your sweetheart (or yourself, because you can!). It even comes with a downloadable "Caramel Tasting Guide For Two" opportunity.
Or, consider a traditional way to share this day with a beautiful box of caramel delights. It is adorned with a sweet bow and card, and we love that McCrea's uses the fewest and freshest ingredients to make these delicious flavor combinations. They use organic and fair-trade ingredients and they package them in 100% biodegradable containers so you're being indulgent and eco-friendly at the same time. WIN!

Then you won't have to worry about losing any of those precious memories! Paper Culture Eco-Friendly Cards
And if you're really Jonesing to go the traditional Valentine's Day route, we love Paper Culture for doing so! These fun classroom cards are beautifully made. They are definitely a cut above the old aisle-five cards your kiddos may be filling out for their classmates, and the fun 'x' and 'o' shapes make them ready for an entire class to play tic-tac-toe at recess! They're personalized, but what we love even more is Paper Culture's mission. Their goal is to inspire design and quality products, but in a way that recognizes the crisis climate and the importance of sustainable production. Every order from Paper Culture plants a tree in this world. Yep, Paper Culture's employees grab shovels and plant trees in their local community, and they also partner with international and national arborists to plant trees all over the globe. They've already planted over 1,000,000 trees and buying your classroom cards (or any other fun items) helps go toward that effort.
All of their products are sustainably produced, from materials like 100% post-consumer recycled paper (no new trees are harmed in the making of their holiday cards and wedding invitations) and they work hard to offset their entire carbon footprint on a corporate level too. They print on two sides of the paper in their office, they recycle and compost and they choose offices that are close to public transportation.
Oh, and they make incredible customized products that will knock your socks off! Happy Valentine's Day (and Mother's Day and Father's Day and Easter and Thanksgiving and New Baby to you!)
Raddish Cooking With Love Kit
Raddish is an awesome kids' subscription box that was designed by teachers and chefs to inspire our children in the kitchen. Raddish works to bring families together and show kids the joy of cooking, and we love that each new culinary adventure includes new themes from different cultures. Each box also meshes science and seasons and holidays (the Cupid's Kitchen Box is ADORBS!) and includes three laminated recipe guides that have the recipe and culinary skill. Our favorite is that kids get quality kid-size cooking tools, an apron patch and hands-on activities. You can also access all sorts of free online bonus materials that have diet modifications, recipes, more activities and even musical playlists! And, you're working together in love and harmony building healthy cooks and eaters!
Block Island Organics Night Cream
If your house is anything like mine, "What do you want?" is often asked of me by my husband and son. I've come to learn (after 23 years of marriage!) that having an Amazon wish list filled with favorites is an easy way for him to show his love and appreciation for me! One of the things I love pampering myself with is this Block Island Organics Revitalizing Night Cream.
It's packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and E. Vitamin C is known for its anti-aging properties and a recent study by Yale University dermatologists suggests vitamin E protects against the effects of sun exposure long after sundown. Featuring gentle botanicals such as cocoa butter, calendula, rosehip, avocado, aloe vera, jojoba, blueberry and more; it revitalizes all skin types and is a little gift to your face every night!
Herla Damask Rose All-Day Cream
Some women like roses for Valentine's Day, others prefer Damask Rose creams. I fall in that category, as Herla's Damask Rose All-Day Cream moisturizes and replenshes my skin in such an amazing way. I look like I'm about 10 years younger with a lovely sun-glow after I've put this cream on, and the all-natural and sustainably sourced ingredients do wonders for my skin and (ahem) aging marks! It's another one of those items I put on my Amazon list and my husband knows he can't go wrong gifting me with!
Organic Sweetheart Pop From Lesser Evil
We know you already love the delicious offerings Lesser Evil offers--clean, natural and organic goodness you can trust. We love that they're offering a special Valentine's Day Popcorn through the month of February! This Sweetheart Popcorn is an organic blend of sweet and salty goodness and our favorite part is that some of the popcorn is even pink! Sweet treats for the whole family, but only through February, so get on it if you want the Sweetheart Pop. Don't worry, though, you can always get our favorite-the Himalayan Pink Salt Popcorn-whenever you're jonesing for it too!
Sea Bags PawPrint Catch-All
You can't forget your beloved furry family members for Valentine's Day, and we adore this PawPrint catch-all bag from Sea Bags! It's made from recycled sails and is washable--it's a must-have for any of us who love our furbabies as family members! It can be perfect for anything from toys to food on trips, and you can even use it as decor, keeping fresh flowers or a potted plant in (you know how sails hold up to moisture!). Take it on a picnic with your pet and your love, or just use it to tote around the market! Wherever you use it, it's going to be the most adorable thing around! And, since you're there, pick up a fabulous little wristlet for yourself. You'll have love with you 24-7--at the end of your wrist!

[embed][/embed]
Okay, this has to be one of our favorite ways for you and your loved ones to spend time together in a really unique way! Consider Let's Roam Couples Scavenger Hunts! They're on an entirely digital platform and instead of using cars or motor vehicles, they reduce carbon footprint while exploring really cool places near you.
You get a date-night where you can wander around the prepared scavenger hunts in any of the 400+ cities they cover, and doing so lets you have some pretty cool memories and together time without the pressure of the 'perfect gift.' What's better than time together with your loved ones anyway?
You can plan one hunt or select an annual pass that gives you 12 months of date nights, and if you want to include your whole family in the fun, Let's Roam encourages that too! Kids as young as five and six can get involved looking for clues and checking out the history of cities they call home (or close enough) and they use screens in a purposeful way to learn and explore WITH THEIR FAMILY instead of mindlessly by themselves!

It's a bath line that was designed for kids by a mom (who's also a dentist) who wanted to take care of the earth and her son's skin. Literally. Your kids will love the Bath Volcano, the Bubble Bath Pouch, the Foaming Bath Pebbles and the Crackling Bath Crystals and you just might find yourself borrowing some too!
