Since this is the essential oil thread, can we make a list of EO's to avoid while pregnant or nursing? Or other warnings?

I'm not pg right now, and dd is close to weaning (I think), but this is information I wouldn't mind having readily available. I use some natural cosmetics (like Aubrey Organics) which have a number of EOs in them. And too often I find myself having to search out individual EOs from a number of different sources just to make sure that they are "safe". Very time-consuming.
I find myself sticking to tea tree oil and lavender mostly right now.

So how about if you find some info, share it here, and then we can compile a list?

I have some info from one source, and if you all don't mind, I'll go ahead and post it.

Great thread. I'm semi-new to eos but am happy to see that I use it much the same way as people here. Something not yet mentioned yet - I use a few drops of lemon oil in olive oil as the carrier as a furniture polish. It works great.

jkg, I heard the same thing. My friend who started using eos at the same time as myself found a website warning about using eos around cats. I was in the midst of figuring out whether it was true or not when sure enough, one of my cats died within a month my starting to use eos. Not only that, my friend's cat died within a month or two after that. They both had different illnesses, but I thought that was too much of a coincidence. My other cat, however, did not die. But I had vastly reduced my use of eos after the first one died. I'm also not living with her anymore (I just got divorced and the cat is really the ex's and he does not use eos at all).

I would love to see more referrals for sources for eos. I was just going to order another batch. A friend of mine wrote me an email with several websites. I'll check it and post them here. She saw a naturopath who claimed that the people making the eos marked their personality onto the eos themselves, and he had specific people he liked to buy from. That's a bit much for me, but I definitely believe there are better and worse eos. I've definitely been trying to stick with organic eos. If pesticides are bad, then it is really bad in the super-concentrated eos. But they're expensive too, and that's an issue for me.

Quick EO question: I want to add lavender and/or tea tree EO to my vinegar/water cleaning solution. I'm using a 12-oz spray bottle, and wondering how many drops of each I should add. I can't smell, but DD and DH can, so I don't want to overpower them, and obviously, won't know myself.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

anyone have any more info on the cat/eo problem?
is it only certain eos, or all, that are toxic to cats?

I'm new to EO use, but here's how I've used 'em so far:

TTO: a few drops in my all-purpose cleaner
in DS's wipe solution
on bug bites

Ylang Ylang: one drop on my skin as a perfum (don't know if I'm "supposed" to do this or not--but one drop isn't overpowering)

I buy EO at a local natural food store. The Ylang Ylang is from Aura Cacia. I'd love to try the perfum recipe on the bottle:

2 drops ylang ylang, 3 drops geranium, 12 drops patchouli, 1 drop cassia bark in a mister.

Does anyone use a nebulizer to diffuse their oils? How does it work? Do you go through alot of oils with this method?

For my 32oz. bottle of vinegar/water (equal parts) wonder spray, I put in probably 40 or 50 drops of TTO. The scent is fairly strong (albeit nice -- like "fresh cut grass or something," according to DH ), but DH does *not* like the smell of vinegar and this way there's nary a trace of it!

I didn't cut and paste the list of discussion questions..

- I use them to clean everything! I put a drop each of lemon, lavender, geranium in green clay w/ water for a mask (I've also used whip egg whites w/ these oils for a face mask too)

- 1/2 c baking soda, enough castille soap to make it consistancy of frosting, 5 or so drops of e/o of my choice (lemon, sweet orange, basil, lavender whatever I'm cleaning) and rub on sinks, tubs, counters, etc and rinse, it cleans up like the soft scrubbers in the store only better! It shines up the faucets so pretty!!

- Lavender & Tea Tree Spray Cleaner
1 t. borax
2 T. white vinegar
2 c. hot water
1/4 t. Lavender essential oil
3 drops Tea Tree essential oil

- fart buster room spray (ok lol ds named this one)
5 drops Orange
2 drops Cinnamon
2 drops clove
4 oz. distilled water
splash of vodka

- Rose Geranium, Palma Rosa, Bergamot, fennel & Clary Sage to relieve pms.

- peppermint and pink grapefruit in a car diffuser to ward off nausea

- 1 drop of Myrrh in half a glass of water, makes an excellent mouthwash (or applied neet on a canker sore)

- lavender oil is a super duper aniseptic for owies

I use lavender on one boy and the other one likes red manderin (OMG smells like candy! he smells so sweet I could eat him up LOL)

vetiver is another scent I just LOVE!

- I use old chapstick tubes to put in epsom salts and add drops of oils for a "smelling salts" thing I keep in my bag. for myself I use blue tansy - it works like a charm in stressful situations. I've done other oils like that too.

as far as finding recipes and such all I did was a google seach and a bazillion sites come up. I searched "essential oil recipe"

theives blend (Clove, lemon, cinnamon, Eucalyptus radiata and rosemary) I rub on our feet every night in a carrier of jojoba. If we are going in a public place I put some drops on a tissue

I've purchased oils from several places. I like this site for thier oils and the info on what it can be good for and what scent it is, etc.
new directions

Anybody compare the brands Young Living versus Wyndmere? Let's not endorse one company but prices vary so widely it's hard to know what's reliable. Young Living says their oils are "Therapuetic Grade" Is that just a marketing gimmick so they can charge higher prices?

Help for a newbie please!

I have been using Lavender, TTO, & Sweet Orange neat on my face for about a month. What a difference it has made!!! Clean smooth skin that I haven't had in years (not since, beauty school and twice daily facials).
I use TTO or Sweet Orange in the morning to get me going and Lavender at night to help me sleep. I use 3 drops for my whole face. It might seem like a lot but it works great. Next I want to try Bergamont. I haven't found a carrier oil I like yet (hate the feeling of oil on me) soI hope I can use Bergamont neat also.
I am looking for a Lotus EO if anyone know of a great one. I used to get it from a local place that went out of business. It was called Fuke's, if anyone knows of their supplier I would be so HAPPY to get in touch with them.

I'm really new to EOs. In fact, I've never even used any. We bought a bottle of TTO but threw it away after I read some information that stated a few drops could kill a pet We tried to figure out if that was true or not but no one got back to me so we threw it out to be safe.

So if you use 3 drops of neat oil, do you just rub it into your skin? Do you have to wash your face first or does this take care of cleaning? I've stopped washing my face and all I do now is wipe with a warm or cool washrag depending on my mood.

Thanks

I wash my face in warm water (to open up the pores) and than place one drop on my forehead (rub in) one on each check (rub in). For the most part this will take place of cleaning the skin. I don still use Aveeno, in the shower, on my face. My skin has really started to clear.

Do you mean for sweaty feet? Cypress oil is supposed to be good for that. http://www.dreamingearth.com/essentialoils.html I'm very new to EOs so I've only read this, never tried it.

The one, and only book, I've yet read recommended diluting the oil in a carrier oil. There are several that are okay to use that won't change the benefits of the oil. If you want, I can go get the book and give you the list of okay oils.

ETA:

And then you would rub the oil directly on the problem area.

Great thread! I use lavender on a pillow of herbs at night (warmed in the microwave), tea tree on pimples. I put a cotton ball of lavender & eucalyptus in our vacuum cleaner, so the room smells good everytime the boys vacuum.

I am really interested in adding some oils to my vinegar/water spray. I work at a residential home for boys and have 10 of them, about age 12. I am determined to cut the number of chemicals we use, especially since so many of them struggle with emotional disorders. I have several that complain about the vinegar smell . . . anything I can add to it? I have read some of the posts that include lavender & tea tree oil. Do these make it smell better? Any idea where I can find some good "recipes?" TIA!

No not really some sites recommend when giving kids some EO to mix it with olive oil and rub on feet. For kids under 7 and babies. I guess some are too harsh for a baby or small child to take by mouth. I guess that way it gets in their system and feet are a bit less sensative then other areas to rub and have many blood vessels. Does that make sense. I know it sounds whacked out but so true.

No "recipe" but yes, adding EOs to the vinegar/water spray will help to mask the vinegar spray. Lavender & TTO are great because they're also antibacterial so they help clean AND smell better. I tend to add a little TTO for it's antibacterial properties & then some sweet orange because it's relatively inexpensive & smells YUMMY. I'd just play around to figure out how much to add. I get my EOs in bigger bottles & use a pipette to add it to things so I can't tell you in drops how much I use.

I'm new to EOs, too! Thanks, I really enjoy this!

I bought some organic clove EO and put it on my babe's gums where he had teething inflammation and he HATED it! But then seemed like he wasn't in pain anymore... It IS strong. I tried it on myself, first.

Any other uses for clove oil? I have the sense that I'll be trying to use up the bottle in other ways... Maybe in a massage oil designed for sore muscles (it burns!)?
