What essential oils can you not live without? And why?

Top two on my list are tea tree oil (for it's antiseptic properties--it cleans and disinfects everything)and lavender (for cuts, burns, it's calming effects, bug bites, insect repellant).

#1 is Lavender for all the reasons you mentioned, plus it just smells so darn good
Citronella to keep the bugs away
Peppermint for headaches

Those are the main three I use although sometimes I add others just for the smell (like lemon)

For me the essentials are

Lavender: calming....can be used in the bath before bedtime to help induce sleep and relaxation

Eucalyptus: cleaning products (I make my own) and great to put in bath or bottom of shower when I am stuffed up with a cold or sinus problems

Lemon: cleaning products

tea tree: natural disenfectant and great for healing. I use it on zits, add it to my shampoo for scalp problems and to my waterpik to ease sores and pain from braces. I put it in spray bottle mixed with water and Dr Bronners to spray down potty seat, toilets, floors after the toilet overflows, cleaning washer, diaper pail, little hands etc etc Especially when there is someone sick in the house. I could go on and on!!

peppermint: also good to bring down fevers, clear sinuses and of course, cleaning products.

I use CLEAN HOUSE CLEAN PLANET by Karen Logan for cleaning product recipes. I love this book and will never be without it.

These are my favorite:

1) Lavender (for all the reasons listed above)
2) Tea Tree (same as all above)
3) German Chamomile (multiple medicinal purposes for instance diaper rash)
4) Peppermint (we have alot of ants in Fl and they hate this)

Lavender is the only one I usually use neat or undiluted on skin

What do you use sweet orange for?

How do you use German Chamomile for diaper rash?

I always have tea tree in the house, I think that is about it though. It looks like I need to pick up a few more things.

My favorite oil resource book is : The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Worwood.

For German Chamomile - dilute it ( very small amt like a drop in pint of water for newborn) in water and soak a small wash cloth or cotton pad or add a bit to diaper rash cream. The chamomiles (there are 2 that i know of-the other is Roman) have soo many uses!
In terms of amounts of oils to use- it is essential to buy a reference-as the age of child can determine the strength of concoction

I like..

1. Tea Tree
2. Lavender
3. Rosemary, it is great for the skin and I put it in lots of toiletries
it isn't good for pregnant women though
4. Peppermint
5. Spearmint
6. Lemongrass
7. Sweet Orange
8. Eucalyptis
9. Grapefruit

I like mints to kind of counteract the smell of tea tree which my dh HATES. Plus like mangabey mama mentioned ants hate them.

I get grapefruit to use in cleaning products and bath stuff. I was just lookng for something a little different from the usual lemon and the grapefruit smells yummy!

Oh Geez, I never buy chamomile. It is just so incredibly expensive. I love the small of chamomile is just costs so much!!

I like making my own room sprays and for the longest time I kept using lime (yum) but I have been on a peppermint and grapefruit kick lately.

I have a mint addiction. (as you will note I have three on my list :LOL) I am wondering how I am going to do without them if I get pregnant again.

what a great thread. many of my answers are the same...

1. LAVENDER - for all the reasons mentioned above...and i just plain love it. we use it for everything. diaper wipes, laundry, cleaning, bath, massage, etc.

2. TEA TREE - again, same reasons. use it mostly for wipes, cleaning, and antiseptic.

3. EUCALYPTUS - add to the bath and/or make a chest rub w/ it when we are sick.

4. PEPPERMINT - two words - foot massage!

5. CHAMOMILE - add to the bath to calm and soothe.

6. ROSE OTTO - love the smell. great during pregnancy for massage and bath. one of dd's favorite smells for baby massage.

7. NEROLI - a new favorite. so calming.

8. CLARY SAGE - another new favorite....just for smelling
