6 Wonderful Foods That Will Keep Your Child Hydrated – Healthy Summer Foods

Summers are in their full swing as we have entered the fifth month of the year already. May marks the onset of soaring temperatures across the country. Summers are synonymous with summer vacations, a trip to the hills and loads of indoor activities. But as the temperatures rise further, it becomes a cause of worry for most mothers. Children are always active, and they just don’t want to rest, even if it means for a minute. So, if you thought preparing healthy summer foods and drinks is a daunting task, then think again. My advice is to keep your child hydrated throughout the year, and more so now when temperatures are soaring.

As moms, on the other hand, we want to take just the right care of our children, so that they don’t fall prey to dehydration and other diseases of the hot season. As a child, I remember my grandmother used to make n number of bottles of Mango Panna whenever we visited her during our summer holidays.
The need to drink more liquids or have foods that are rich in water content becomes more in summers as we tend to sweat a lot. While we can still go ahead and observe how much we sweat in a day. But with children, it is a different ball game altogether. They don’t even want to stop for a drink, hence it becomes important to keep checking on them for having enough fluids in summers.

Presenting some summer drinks/foods which will keep your child hydrated this summer season:

1. Sweet Lassi
Lassi is very popular in many Indian households. In fact, one can call t their best grandma memory of one is from Punjab. Lassi has basically churned yogurt and hence extremely beneficial in hot summer weather. It is a great coolant, plus it is great for the digestive system. While people up north, generally prefer Lassi after having their meals, but you can always give this to your children right after they come tired from their daily park time to satiate the evening hunger pangs. Not to forget it’s great and keeps them hydrated for a good period.

2. WaterMelon
Watermelon is one of the best seasonal fruits which is readily available during the hot summer days. What makes it even better is the fact that 90 % of it is constituted of water with an addition to some vital nutrients. Watermelon can be had best in the form of a fruit salad with a generous topping of your favorite Chaat Masala. You can also try making ice popsicles for your little ones, which serve as a very nice dessert.

3. Cucumber
Cucumber is also one of the best superfoods which can keep your child well hydrated. Consisting of 96 % water, cucumber is one vegetable that children love the most. It serves as a side dish with your meals, or you can just put it in your little ones’ snack box as well. Cucumbers are rich in vitamins and antioxidants and are also rich in dietary fiber which aids in proper digestion.

4. Strawberries
One of the children’s favourite fruit, which is aesthetically also very beautiful also has very high-water content. Strawberries are also rich in Vitamin C, which is necessary for the repair of gums, hair and other body tissues. They are also a good source of folate which is responsible for building red blood cells. No wonder strawberry is hot with children, that it has found a place of permanence in our kitchens in the form of smoothies, jellies, and jams.

5. Pineapple
Pineapple is another fruit that falls in the category of high water content fruits. The best part about high water content in these fruits is that you can just grab and eat it on the go, nothing fancy required for it. Pineapple which consists of 87 % water is also low in sodium and fat and hence extremely beneficial for children in the rough summer months. Try having a fun activity with your child by having flame-less cooking and make pineapple popsicles. Sounds fun- doesn’t it?

6. Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe or musk melon as it is popularly known in India also comes next in line to watermelon as far as children’s favorite fruit is concerned. An extremely sweet fruit that is high in water content, musk melon is also a summer fruit. Cantaloupe is also rich in potassium. Potassium is one electrolyte that can be lost by the body during dehydration, hence it is a great option to replenish the body with the necessary fluids.
