Introducing solids to your infants is an exciting milestone. When your baby is 6-8 months old, try incorporating some single-grain cereals into their diet. Between 6-8 months, begin adding purees made up of fruits like Apple, Banana, Mango, Watermelon and vegetables puree made up of Spinach, Sweet potato, Beetroot, Tomato, Pumpkin, Potato.
Start with half a spoonful or less, your baby may not know what to do at first. Your baby may look confused, roll the food around inside the mouth, or reject it, do not make your baby eat if he/she cries or turns away. Go back to breastfeeding for a time before trying again. Remember that starting solids foods is a gradual process, once your baby accepts solids continue breastfeeding as often as before and add solids as your baby’s appetite increases, at first your baby will still be getting most of the nutrition from breast milk. Also, each baby is different, so readiness to start solid foods will vary.
Signs that your baby is ready to eat solids
• They are interested in food, For example, they may watch others eat, reach for food, and open their mouth when food approaches.
• They have the oral motor skills needed to move food to the throat and swallow it.
• Your baby is still hungry after getting a full day’s portion of milk
• Your baby can sit upright and hold up his/her head.
• Reaches out for your food
There is no exact science to introduce solids. Just do your best to follow your baby’s cues about when to increase the number of solids, and take care to ensure that breast milk remains the baby’s primary source of nutrition for the first year. The nutrients in breast milk are particularly important for growth and development during baby’s first year.
