my 2 week old has a habit of falling asleep on my breast. now i wouldn't think this was a problem except that s he does this after she's been hand sucking and rooting like a mad little thing. she stay on the breast for maybe 5 minutes and falls alseep with my nipple in her mouth. when i take her off, she screams bloody murder... obvioulsly still hungry. how do i prevent her from sleeping so that she can eat. i keep her unswaddled and stripped to a diaper during feedings

My ds would wake up enough to suck if I gave him a light little pat on the back of the head every time his eyes closed. He was a light sleeper, though.

I've heard putting your own cold hands on their skin can wake them up. Or maybe let her nurse through the nap, and then once she has woken up you can keep her on the breast to get a little more. At that age, the more time on the breast the better anyway.

Try running your finger from her forehead back to the base of her head, tickling her feet. I had an epi w/my first and he was the same way. It gets better.

You can also try stroking/tickling under her chin a little (from neck to chin). That worked well with my dd at that age.

Just a modifiedartist.gif trying to find some peace and regain my balance.

Try nursing in the cross-cradle hold with her bum tucked well up under your arm(almost in your armpit!) and the palm of your hand between her shoulder blades. When she stops sucking, press her bum into you firmly with your arm/elbow and see if she doesn't start up again.

i read the tips on that link--what worked for me was the damp washcloth on the face and occasionally the armpit(!)...and football hold cause he could see my face and i could watch his to tell when he was about to nod.off. it will probably pass when she gets older.

I gave DD#1 a little rub on her feet on the palms of her hands and that always worked.

In addition to the suggestions of the pp - I also squeez my breast gently a few times while it is still in her mouth and that seems to do the trick - dd will wake back up like, "Oh yeah - there's milk in there..." and keep nursing.
