My DS has been having issues with constipation, and our doc thinks it's a food allergy.  We went to a GI specialist today, and she told me that nursing is causing problems because then he's not getting enough fiber.  I think this sounds wacky.  Thoughts?

I think that sounds wacky too!!  My daughter also had digistive issues for the 1st year & we went to a GI Specialist.  I cut dairy out of my diet 100% (b/c it's the most COMMON food allergy) so that no dairy proteins could be passed through.  But not getting enough FIBER b/c you are breastfeeding too much??  That does NOT make sense to me.  Breast milk is 80-95% WATER, which is what is needed to poop!  If anything, I would think it would be the OPPOSITE b/c dehydtration causes constipation.  I would do my own research online and get a second opinion before I would even consider cutting back or stopping nursing if I were in your shoes.  Just the SMALL amount of online research I did just now all says that breastfed babies are LESS likely to get constipated b/c breastmilk is so much more easily digested.

Thanks guys! Exactly what I thought, lol! She is worried that nursing is preventing him from eating.  Which is stupid at his age - she never even asked me how much he nursed or discussed much of his diet, or our approach.  I didn't like that at all.  She immediately judged me the moment she walked in and saw that I was nursing DS.  I was nursing him because he just had a fit over the nurse needing to get his vitals, not because I'm preventing him from eating, which is totally what she thought.  And, like you guys said, if anything he nursing should be *helping* him poo!! Gah, the more I think about how she handled things, the more irked I become.

We have found several food triggers for him, but haven' been able to clear the constipation, unfortunately.  Which is why we were there.  But that's another thread! (I'm thinking that he is severely gluten intolerant and so we just removed all of the cross reactive foods, and his mood is improving significantly, so hopefully that's what it is...we were already dairy, soy, gluten, corn, and most other grain free - None of which the GI doc discussed with us).

Anyway, thanks for the reassurance!

My 22 month daughter has been having constipation for the last 6+ months, still nursing frequently. I suspect she started withholding after a really really nasty stomach bug with awful diarrhea back then. I now have to make sure she eats prunes every day or she will get terribly constipated. I also have eased up on my no juice policy in order to get her to drink more. Most days now she gets pear juice diluted with water. It's something that has to be constantly managed in our house and no dietary changes makes a difference. Hope it clears up for you!

Toddler magic tea contains Peppermint, Chamomile, Rooibos, Fennel, Licorice Root. All these ingredients are good for digestion and stomach ache in babies and toddlers. My baby caught with indigestion and this tea was lifesaver for us.
