I just returned to work after 18 months of maternity leave (I live in Canada, home of the long mat leave). Today I decided to get the flu shot, as my employer offers it for free. I was heading for the elevator to go the my shot appointment when I bumped into the head of my department. We started chatting and the fact that I was going to get the flu shot came up. Suddenly he says, very concerned "Hang on, you're still nursing right? Make sure you ask the nurse if it's okay to get the shot...you want to make sure your little one is okay."

I was a little shocked that he assumed I was still nursing my 18 month old (which I am), and mentioned something to that effect. He laughed and told me that in his last job, 1/3 of his staff went on mat leave at once and he quickly became aware of the importance of long term bfing and now just assumes women nurse until at least 2

Just an aside- nearly all flu shots have mercury... I wouldn't be comfortable with that while nursing.

That's great that he just assumed you were still nursing. It's such a refreshing change from the comments we normally hear!

I'm picturing just HOW he became aware of it. Imagining MANY impassioned women talking about it.

Good for him! I love to hear good breastfeeding stories!
