Hi. We are going to be building a new home in the near future, and though our funds are limited, I want to build it as natural as possible, so as not to have to breathe in all the chemicals.

What are the top things I can do inexpensively, or what are the most important things to avoid that give off the most toxins. i'm sure carpet is one, but what else is the worst that we should try to avoid.

Has anyone built recently to know current costs or quality?

THIS BLOG is a favorite of mine - with TONS of inspiration.... they built thier home from scratch using materials local to them, and all natural or recycled products.

I would say to watch out for "modern" insulation techniques... like fiberglass for example. Try to use more natural insulation like wool or newspapers. The people from the blog above are using recycled empty bottles under the foundation for insulation. Not only does it save some items from the landfill, but they also provide great insulation from the cold/heat. It also gives a really strong foundation.
