Has anyone used a nebulizer with their babies? We just started Aaron on a course of albuterol for some persistent wheezing after the liquid did nothing, and he was so upset by the experience. Any tips?

we used a nebuliser with ds1 frequently from about 8 mos, he hated it at first and fought it, but we would hold him close and sing to him while it was on and he liked that a lot, it was the only thing that helped

as he got older he preferred to have books read

my ds#2 has been on a nebulaizer off and on for over a year. He was about your son's age when he started. We would sit in the glider rocker and sing, talk, read books...I even resorted to TV to distract him. Now he holds it himself and he's fine with it. I am not one to "force" my dss to do things, but this was/is a medical issue and my dh and I just had to make him do it. I remember how awful it was in the beginning.

A nebulizer was prescribed by md after mild wheezing when ds was a month old.

I read the rx insert, albuterol is not fda approved for children under 12 years old!

Chose to take ds to the chiropractor for treatment, and eliminate dairy from my diet.

No more problems. Dh will be a year old on the 22nd.

We had similar situations with older ds's, before nebulizers were prevalant. They were also "cured" of wheezing through chiropractic and elimination of dairy.

I used to do the treatment while baby was nursing, just held it near her nose.

We had to do treatments for two winters in a row with DS#1, and a few things helped- administering the meds while he was in his highchair and offering him a meal, snack, or reading to him. Doing the treatment while he's in the bathtub has worked, too- but the older he was, the harder it was to get him to sit still. Reading with him on the couch while another person administered the nebulizer worked well, and probably his favorite was pretending the mouthpiece was a microphone and getting him to sing into it.

HTH!

You can do a "blow-by" which is when you give the nebulizer treatment while the babe is asleep. That's only good for one or possibly two treatments in a 24 hour period, though. The other suggestions here are good.

When your child can't breathe, nothing else matters. Do whatever you must to get the albuterol treatment into the babe.
