5 month old DS is on the verge of cutting his 2nd tooth, and while he has been coughing (mostly a dry cough, and there has been some stuffiness which I attribute to teething), he woke up this morning coughing with substance. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, no fever, and doesn't seem to need comfort.

When should I begin to worry that this is a cold and take further action? And how do I treat this cold?

(I would just call my ped, but it is Sat and we are currently in NY and not OR)

When my ds got stuffy while cutting a tooth, I'd just assume it was due to the teething until I saw the mucus change color.

Regardless of the cause, I would use the plunger (or whatever it's called) to clear his nose for nursing, increase my sodium ascorbate intake (vitamin c) so it would pass to him, and if it seemed to be changing to a cold, I'd give him a small amount of elderberry syrup (sambucol).

HTH!

Thank you so much for your reply!

I need to run to the store later, so I will look and see about getting some vitamin C to supplement. I used the bulk thingy and did clear out some of his nose, but he seems to be breathing ok.

Poor little guy... I can just see the 2nd tooth starting to crack the surface. I wish it would get easier as it went along!

I wish I could say it does get easier! My ds is working on his 2 year molars now; I'll be really glad when they'll all done.

About the vitamin C, try to get sodium ascorbate powder (with bioflavonoid pills, too) rather than ascorbic acid. You may have to order them. Check out the Sodium Ascorbate thread in the Vaccination forum for more info on this.

Good luck and I hope your little starts feeling better soon.
