Circumcision/HIV article and the Time in article were my favorites.

[I]Your Letters[I] are always my favorite part of each issue. I love reading what others think and feel about the topics presented and seeing how those thoughts and feelings might be the same or different from mine. I also love the personal photos of readers that are included in each issue.

As an educator I appreciated "No More Homework." I believe structured activities are too dominant in our children's lives and it's nice to read articles that support my stance.

I also liked "Time In" tremendously, as well as "Fathers - Ringmasters . . . "

This was a fabulous issue overall. I learned quite a bit from both the "Circumcision and HIV" article and the "Birth of a Lactivist" article. (Didn't even know my own state was sooooo progressive with breastfeeding mothers' rights since we don't have any laws governing the right to pump at work!)

Thanks for an outstanding magazine.

Weelllll UUGGH I wanted to vote for more than one!!

My favorites were:

Art of Mothering: Time-in
I voted for this one because out of the three I liked, it was the one that gave me information that I didn't already know, whereas the others supported what I already thought. I have been wondering what to do when my son gets to that age because I never really had any form of diciplin when I was a child, other than screaming and yelling. I found this information very valuable and will be using it when my son is older.

Birth of a Lactivist: A breastfeeding mom gets political
This was important for me to see right now because I've been dealing with an issue with breastfeeding in Walmart. It gave me the courage to call who I needed to call and I am grateful for that.

Ways of Learning: No more homework
This confirmed what I've thought since 6th grade. I was reeeeallly happy to have literature to back it up next time it comes up in conversation.

I liked the circumcision article, but also was inspired by the breastfeeding activist article.

I loved them all but my fave would have to be "Ways of Learning -- No more Homework". What a timely article!

janasmama 07-26-2008 04:27 PM

I really like 'Birth of a Lactivist' because it portrayed the feelings of a breastfeeding woman who has never had a negative encounter so she didn't feel the need to be active in BF'ing activism. It showed how it's important to participate in activities even when we haven't been faced with the issue firsthand.

I liked all the articles in the issue, but I really liked Peggy O'Mara's " Who wants to sleep alone?" I felt this was a great article! babies should sleep as close to her parents as possible!
The article appeared at the same time I've been I reading about the so called cry it out theory. How terrible that babies should endure such a thing and How can the parents stand to ignore their child's crying?

Thanks for the comforting article.

Oh! and I liked "the Birth of a Lactivist" article. I was impressed by her experience with the president of Pottery Barn!

Sorry, its hard to just pick one story!

RomanGoddess 07-31-2008 09:50 AM

I liked all the articles but voted for "Birth of a Lactivist".

I also found the homework article pretty revealing (especially since I don't live in the States). I would be interested in more articles on alternative school education (Montessori, Waldorf, RE), especially pedagogies that don't do homework. Something comparing alternative pedagogies (ex. differences between Montessori and Waldorf) would be also be good to see.

This was my first issue of Mothering and I loved reading every page! I just wish it came every month instead of only every two months!

Oh, it is always so hard to pick a favorite. I LOVED Birth of a Lactivist. The author described exactly how I felt when I was in a similiar situation, but with a family member. I am very happy that I can purchase products from a favorite store (PB) and know that they support BFing.

I always really appreciate A Quiet Place and the homework article.

The Truth About Circumcision

Fathers: Comedians ....

Who wants to Sleep Alone

The Art Of Mothering: Time In

I also really liked how the magazine was inclusive of a dad's perspective... and the circ'ing article was BANG ON!!! Thanks, Mothering, for yet another stellar magazine!

I loved the homework article. I have felt that children have too much homework but I enjoyed reading research to back up my beliefs.

slf 08-27-2008 08:53 PM

While I enjoyed many of the articles, In His Own Words: Fathers, ringmasters and comedians came at just the right time. I went out to run some errands one evening leaving DS with DH for the first time. I came home to find DH with a huge smile on his face-- he discovered that making these weird, loud elephant noises caused DS to laugh a big, deep belly laugh. I had just read that article that morning and had to laugh at my DH's own creativity when left alone with baby!

Bad Mama Jama 08-28-2008 05:43 PM

No fair! I wanted to vote for two!

I was torn between Art of Mothering: Time-in and A Childs World: A summer to savor . I think the one I really needed was the Time-In. It was very helpful in reminding me of what is going on for my dd when she is acting out.

bwdiaz 08-31-2008 02:21 AM

This was my first issue of Mothering and I loved it. I'm expecting my first baby soon and I really need to hear more natural viewpoints than what I'm currently being exposed to. I am glad to find a place where others support my "alternative" parenting ideas. I picked up the mag because of the circumcision article, but I also found the summer article and time in articles highly engaging. I can't wait for the next issue!

My first baby : is 18 weeks along!

mummyofan 09-09-2008 02:09 AM

Just loved all that was there, but in the end, I HAD to pick Lactivist as I'm breatfeeding my Daughter, and trying to promote it with a friends relative who is uneducated about it and needs alot of support to deal with her mother who wants her to use formula, cot sleep the baby , cry it out.... nope, I don't understand it properly either.... but anyway, I tried to send her resources around the time of issue, but it bounced and I don't know how else to get the info to her... sorry to rant on; edit as needed!!!

sooooooooo then, letters I always just .... there's too much in that issue that I love to write all. Gosh, it's like an addiction!! I just LOVE Mothering. I, too, wish it were every month and maybe weekly????
