At the hospital (10 pm) they checked me and said I was dilated 3 cm. I was put into a labor and delivery room and left with my husband and doula. They understood my wishes for a natural birth and really just let us be. They did have me strapped in with an external fetal monitor but my continued back pain was making it difficult to stay still. They came in to move it several times and then said they had to put me on an internal fetal monitor. I didn't like the idea of this. but they said they had to because they couldn't keep track of the baby and it looked as though his heart rate dropped during contractions.

The internal monitor ended up being really helpful, because it allowed me to get out of the bed and stand up. I used the birth ball, and a commode to lean against and eventually ended up on my hands and knees on the bed. My husband was fantastic and worked right along side with my doula. I had some intense back labor and finally reached a point where I felt like I couldn't go on. When this happened, I asked the nurses to check my progress. By that point I was over 8 cm, so I knew I could keep going. I had made it that far.

By almost 5 am, I had the urge to push. The nurses rolled me over and told me to start pushing, which I did, but then they realized how ready I was. They shut my legs and rolled me to the side and told me to wait because the doctor wasn't there yet. My Dr. was out of town, so they were waiting on the on-call Dr.

We waited, and waited. The baby wanted out and with each contraction I felt as if I could not hold him in, but they kept telling me to breathe through it. Finally the Dr. rolled in at around 5:50 am. His reason for being so late?? He couldn't find his car keys!

It took me only minutes to push the baby out once they rolled me back over and littleJack was born at 5:57 am. He weighed 5 pounds 12 ounces and was the most beautiful little thing.

Overall, I really hated the hospital birth atmosphere for myself. There was too much medical equipment and way to many nurses during the birth. I don't know what they were all doing there. And, because it was a different dr., my birth plan was kinda ignored, even though everyone said they read and understood it. For instance, they didn't wait for the cord to quit pulsing and my DH didn't even get to cut it! But, in that moment, it all happened too fast to stop it, and so I just have to make sure that next time, we are more on top of things...or I just need to have a home birth.

I was successful in having the most natural birth I could in the hospital and was completely drug free. Jack is the most perfect baby and we just adore him. He is so wonderful!

Congratulations! I'm always amazed at the women who get the natural birth they wanted in a hospital environment. Good for you
