...am I an idiot or does everyone end up peeing on their own hand? I'm half-standing half-crouching over the toilet bowl, trying to relax enough to get myself to pee in the sterile cup I'm only supposed to touch the outside of...let's just say it was messy

I just sit on the toilet....makes it easier. I generally end up peeing all over the outside of the cup and my hand too.
I just wash the cup off after when I wash my hands.

shhh....don't tell my doc but I just put the rim of the cup up against my vulva. They tried to get me to be all sterile and stuff....and I say, that's just too much. I'll use the stupid little wipe, but I'm not spreading the lips while trying to peer around my belly AND try to keep the "flow" going in one direction. I don't know about you, but if the lips are spread, there's no telling where it's gonna go.

Besides, once the door's shut, I'm on my own anyway They haven't complained about a contaminated sample yet, and this is babe #3 for me.

That's why they have soap and towels in the bathroom right there. At least at my midwife's.

Sometimes I'm more coordinated than others though... I think I half sit on the toilet and hold the cup down under, but I forget. I just get it done.

it's not sterile ... just clean. (Unless the office is giving you a different kind of kit)

The big thing is .... 1)wipe with the antibacterial wipes they give you; 2)start your urine stream, then stop; 3) THEN, pee in the cup.
The cup DOES NOT have to be full ... only abut a third of the way. What the office staff is doing is 'dipping your urine' ... putting a little reagent strip, and checking for bacteria, and protein, and maybe ketones.

The bacteria is measured 1+, 2+, etc, up to 4+. Where I work, a lot of times, we don't even blink if a (female) pt has 1+ bacteria, unless she's having symptoms. It's very easy to contaminate the sample. We will also look at a few more things, on the lab results, that could indicate a UTI(Urinary tract infection).

Just wait til you get a GREAT big belly ..... I can't even see down there anymore!!

What??? You aren't suppose to let the cup touch your body??? Nobody ever mentioned that to me....ever!!

I notice now, that at the dr's offices, they are handing out those little packaged wipes. Not sure why. Isn't washing your hands (and yes the cup! lol) good enough?

Those are to wipe your hoo hoo before you pee in the cup.

haha. My midwife is pretty low-tech. Their pee-cups are little paper dixie cups with your name written on them. It makes me happy that they don't get overly scientific about it - after all they just dip a piece of paper in it anyway.

Wow can't say I have had the pee on the hand problem but I didn't know the cups weren't suppose to touch either. They are always good about not only telling you what the wipe is for, but telling you how they want you to wipe with it.

You know, I must be one straighter pee-er b/c I don't remember ever peeing on my hand. My mws have always been low tech, too. I can pee in the dixie cup or just pee on the stick. No one's ever been real worried about how I do it and I check the results myself!

This pg my mw isn't even checking my urine, at least she hasn't at any but my first appt. They use little dixie cups as well, unless you need a clean catch. There is also a laminated sign in the bathroom explaining how to do a clean catch, and they always ask if you need to know how to do it.

no matte what I do if spread or not it always has a mind of its own.
I have had this ever since i can remember.
I joke as I call it a misbehaving pee stream..
Must be inherited because my daughter as kid was the same way..
And even my grand daughter is the same..
