Our friend who lives in our downstairs apt. has (what we all think is) the flu. Her girlfriend is set to babysit my 13 month old son tomorrow. Her girlfriend is not sick at the moment - but can she pass it along? Her girlfriend has been taking care of her (our friend), staying over, helping out since she got sick (which was just yesterday).
Anyone know how possible the contamination is here?
thanks,
chester

Can't be too careful. I would ask her not to come. I think that the flu is only supposed to be contagious while you are running fever, but I've heard 30 after exposure even with no symptoms. Of course, that is probably just part of the media hype to get a flu shot. Still- the flu and a young child is not a good mix. Can you get a different sitter?

Hey,
Viruses can be contagious for ling periods of time. Can be airborne or contact (hand to hand, hand to mouth , etc.)
Don't have her babysit. You are asking for the flu if you do (in my opinion.)
I took care of a laboring mom and her newborne last year when I felt under the wheather and the was not a replacement RN for me to go home. I wore a mask and washed my hands so much they were peeling by the end of my shift, and wore gloves. By the end of the next day I had a fever and the next week my blood test came back pos for Influenza A. The week i got back to work (12 days after taking care of the mother and baby cuplet)
I was floated to peds. Guess who my patient was.... The 12 day old newborn I had helped deliver and take care of post partum.

Sorry, moral of story, don't risk it. CANCEL BABYSITTER. (also..... HOMEBIRTH!)
