The prenatals I’ve been taking have 800mcg, which I know is “enough” as far as the recommendation goes, but I was wondering if maybe I should take an extra folic acid supplement when I get pregnant? At least for the first trimester anyway…

Any thoughts? What are you ladies taking/planning to take?

I've been wondering the same thing.... I know, not the most helpful answer ever

I've been taking my pre-natal plus an extra small dose of folic acid (I'm not home right now so I can't check the dose).

That's what I was thinking about doing... In addition to the 800 in my prenatal. Not sure if it'd help anything though. *shrug*

I should also add that I’m losing weight steadily, and will probably continue to do so until I get my BFP. So maybe because of that I should be taking extra? My diet is pretty balanced though, I’m not “dieting” to lost weight or anything… So I don't know.

I was told that we should be taking at least 1 mg when trying to conceive and in early pregnancy - unless you're over 35, as I am; I'm supposed to take 4 mg during the pregnancy.

not sure about the folic acid. i'll go look in my cabinet in a min, but i'm taking two vitamin c, two fish oil, one calcium, one iron in addition, one baby aspirin, and that's it. ok, i'm taking the stuart prenatal which has 800 mcg of folic acid. it says it 133% of my recommended daily dose.

If your loss had anything to do with a clotting issue, then you'll want to up your folic acid starting now. It is important to build your stores of folic acid preconception. I'm taking a prescription prenatal with 5mg of folic acid. Also, I'd take a B complex with B6 & B12 in it, for the same reasons starting preconception.

My OB recommended 1,600 mg. per day in addition to my prenatal. I am also taking B-complex. Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin, so any excess is peed out - no danger of overdosing on it.

Well most women are fine with the standard 800mcg in prenatals. However, some women with certain issues benefit from taking higher doses of folic acid-standard being 4mg (4000mcg).
Anyways, I have not been diagnosed with any of these issues however, I am going by empiracle data and am currently taking 800mcg+400mcg+800mcg=2mg (oked by my OB of course). I guess we will see how it goes. Good luck.

Wow, I hadn't actually heard that there were cases in which much higher doses than the standard dose of folic acid was strongly recommended. What I have read indicates that 400 mcg of folic acid is recommended daily during all childbearing years, and 800 mcg is recommended while pregnant (and even while trying to conceive). I was also going to mention that some prenatals are not entirely absorbed into your system, which could mean you might not be getting all 800 mcg of the folic acid in the prenatal. I would of course check with your OB, but I think an additional folic acid supplement could be beneficial. And folic acid does need to be stored up before pregnancy, so taking it for as long as possible prior to conception is best.
