Fundamentalists mad at Bush for wording of holiday card
'Christmas' appears nowhere on White House greeting
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...&feed=rss.news
Quote:
Washington -- What's missing from the White House Christmas card? Christmas.

This month, as in every December since he took office, President Bush sent out cards with a generic end-of-the-year message, wishing 1.4 million of his close friends and supporters a happy holiday season.

Many people are thrilled to get a White House Christmas card, no matter what the greeting inside. But some conservative Christians are reacting as if Bush stuck coal in their stockings.

If they don't get a special one of their own they feel sad and left out.

My little brother used to be that way about his sippy cup.

The problem isn't that it excludes Christmas. It's that it includes other holidays. We can't have that, can we? It's a slippery slope, I tell you. Next thing you know, people will be thinking that they deserve freedom of religion or something.

I am a Christian and what I am wondering is did Bush usually write "Christmas" in his cards or is this a new PC thing he is doing??? (I am not a big GW fan myself, I am just curious) I am sending out cards for our business this year that say "Merry Christmas and we look forward to serving you next year" I think that is okay.
Also, "fundies" may be upset because they may believe that Bush is waiver on the Christian faith that he has professed to have

Also one more--please answer--What in a fundementalist in ya'lls view???????I am just wondering if I am considered one here because in the Christian community I am not.

Love your neighbor. Say yes to vax.

I love when the fundies get their undies in a twist.... after all, they are but pawns in the neocon game.

While they're squabbling about hallmark cards, Cheney is eating their children's inheritances. And ours.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Cry.

I think that's a better question for Religious Studies.

I don't know what others think, but my definition of a Christian fundamentalist is: a Christian who believes his/her way is correct, and that all others would be wise to convert, and are usually very conservative, judgmental, and close-minded, and are unhappy when laws or policies meant at including everyone are inacted; because they go against their religion, which they believe is the be-all end-all of life.

That said, I am Christian, and I have no problem with someone saying or addressing "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" because not everyone does celebrate Christmas. In fact, my family never celebrated Christmas when I was younger because of the pagan orgins sorrounding the Christmas tree. I personally celebrate Christmas now, but to me it's not a religious holiday, it's more about goodwill and the spirit of giving to those around you, and of course for my kids; they love Christmas.

I think that it is appropriate to say "Happy Holidays" on those cards because of course not everyone celebrates Christmas, and it allows for everyone to be wished a happy holiday, not just those of us who celebrate Christmas. Certainly it helps others to feel included, who might otherwise feel excluded because they don't celebrate the mainstream holiday. Saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" certainly doesn't mean that Bush isn't a "true Christian" rather it means that he is doing his duty to include all citizens and respecting their culture, one of the few good things he has managed to do during his presidential term.

So are the fundies lining up to boycott bush, the white house? Seems like a double standard to me. No to target but bush oh we will just complain loudly. Now I do realize that bush isn't selling anything...or is he?

is there a 'playing violin' smilie anywhere?

the fundie movement is a big part of why I have become atheist... I'm just sick of the whole thing, in any religion.

and then, OT, I heard on NPR today that ford dropped ads from some gay publication in response to a threatened boycott by fundies. time for the rest of us to boycott ford, I guess...

Let's be careful not to bash/disrespect anyone here. Please.

FWIW, IMO, his cards can say "Screw you and the horse you rode in on. Happy New Year." And truly I don't care...they are his/his staff's cards. Other pres's have said happy holidays, and other's have said Merry Christmas. Mine say something cheesy this year, one year they said nothing just had a good pic on the front.

Pretty much a personal opinion as far as I am concerned. I have larger things to worry about than a card, regardless of who sent it.

When Dennis Hastert, my 'representative', got his panties in a twist because the WH had a 'Holiday Tree' 300 letter-writers sent 'hooray for Dennis Hastert's courage in sticking up for Christian values' emails to the local newspaper.

When Dennis Hastert "worked hard" to pass HR 4241 -- which cuts food assistance for hundreds of thousands of poor people, cuts health coverage and medicines for TENS OF MILLIONS of poor, elderly, disabled, and children, and cuts $4 billion in programs for rural farmers, police officers and firefighters -- you could hear the crickets.

Sleepers, awake.

Rosalyn and Jimmy's card says, "Wishing you peace and joy this holiday season"

I'd rather get a card from them ANY day

who saw Jimmy on the Daily Show?!

"Let me ask you something... Can you explain to me why you are busier than our actual president?"

The whole interview was fabulous.
