Laurelyn Cassandra came into the world at 7:40a June 3rd. After 2 days of exhaustive laboring she arrived into her daddy's hands at tiny 6lbs 12 oz and 19.25 inches with a head full of black curly hair and COVERED in vernix. Nursing is going great minus the usual nipple conditioning stage. If I get a chance and the energy I'll post a birth story in the next few days. Until then enjoy some pictures :)

Laurelyn Cassandra’s Birth Story

It’s always so hard to write out your own birth story. The perspective is always different to you than anyone observing. There are so many minute details, some of which only occur in your head while you labor. Unless you write them down, no one else ever experiences them.

On June 1st I was feeling a little off for most of the day. I was tired and cranky and anxious for my baby to come, but having no definitive signs that she was planning to make her appearance anytime soon. My friend Trish had come over with her kids to chill for the day and have dinner with us. At around 8 pm, I started having contractions that we mildly uncomfortable and about 5 minutes apart. I timed them until about 10 pm and finally decided to call my midwife, Debbie, and give her a heads up. She decided it would be a good idea for her to come check me out and see what’s up (I have a history of fast labors.) When she arrived and checked I was about 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. My contractions had tapered off a bit and I wasn’t convinced this was really it, so she told me she was going to go home and to call her if things picked up. Trish decided to spend the night just in case so we all watched a movie and somewhere around 3 am I went to bed disappointed that nothing seemed to be happening.  I tossed and turned all night.

I woke up at 7 am on June 2, exhausted and cranky and only mildly contracting. Michael had my brother in law watch the kids and Michael, Trish, and I went to the mall to do some walking to try and encourage the contractions.  I had a few decent ones while at the mall and when we went to Goodwill I started having sharp pains near my cervix so I decided it was time to head home. Unfortunately, they tapered out again on the way home.  So depressed and sore I laid down in my bed to try and relax. Trish and I started watching a bunch of waterbirth videos and I soon noticed my contractions taking on a pattern.  This was around 7pm. We put all the kids in bed again (except my oldest who wanted to see the birth) hoping against hope this was leading up to the real thing. By 9pm I still wasn’t convinced they were going anywhere. My poor son fell asleep around 9:45p.  Around 10:30p Michael talked me into trying to have some sex to see if it brought my contractions up. By 10:45p I started having some convincing contractions, but they didn’t appear close enough together.  Trish offered up her hot tub at her house to see, if at the very least, it would either encourage the contractions on or fizzle them out completely and give my body some much needed tension relief.  In the 5 minute, drive to her house I had one contraction, I had one contraction as we walked in the door, and I had one more just before getting into the hot tub. This started at 11pm (the drive over.) We were in the pool for about 30 minutes and I had 8 more contractions that felt the real deal. Enough to the point that I had Michael call my midwife and tell her I felt it was time.  We went home and I continued having contractions every 1.5-2 minutes for 30-45 seconds. I was ecstatic! Trish was taking pictures and video and Michael was making sure all my birth supplies were out and ready, while I paced the hallway and sung along to the Glee soundtracks.

Now, usually, at this point I’m only about 3-4 hours from baby in arms. This was not to be the case this time.  Obviously, my laboring began rather slowly over two days.  Usually from first contraction to baby in arms its about 4-6 hrs total. So I’m already out of my realm at this point and short on patience and energy.

Debbie arrives at around midnight and my friend Christina and her daughter Allison were soon to follow. They began setting up the birth pool, while I paced and we all chatted and laughed and enjoyed ourselves while I paced and contracted. Debbie checked me and I was about 5-6 cm with a bulging bag of waters, but baby hadn’t fully engaged yet. I did some more pacing and finally around 1:30a I got in the birthing tub. We all continued to laugh and joke through the contractions, which were much more manageable and spaced out a little more in the water. Around 2 am, Debbie volunteered to head to Walmart and grab a yoga ball for me to sit on to try and encourage baby to engage.  Since I wasn’t really overly laborious, we felt it was safe and she left with promises to return soon. About 20 minutes after she left I felt the need to go to the bathroom, so off I went. While in there, I got very nauseas and proceeded to vomit . Transition, right?! Wrong!  I didn’t know that though. Again, usually I only throw up once and that’s when I’m in transition. So I yell for Michael and tell him to call Debbie back and tell her what’s going on. I can feel myself get excited and I happily head back into the pool. Michael seems all serious and I ask him between contractions what’s wrong. He stonewalls for a moment and then admits, that he had tried calling Debbie, but she had left her phone sitting on top of our TV. I stay rather calm, and reassure him it will be fine. I continue contracting and around 2:50a Debbie arrives back and we are no worse for wear.  3 am rolls around and we’re still no baby.  4 am comes and goes and still no baby. My friend Christina had a prior engagement for the day and needed to be back home by 6 am so when 5 am rolled around and still no baby, her and Allison said their goodbyes and left well wishes for the birth, hoping they might make it back in time. By this point I have been off and on the toilet a million times, in and out of the shower, I’m dehydrated, exhausted and feeling a little bit on edge. Debbie asks if I want her to check me and I give her the green light. I’m only at a 6-7 and baby still hasn’t fully engaged.  We all decide now would be a good time to eat and drink and try and get some sleep.  Michael, Trish and I are all running on 3-4 hrs sleep and nearly delirious. I manage to drink a few sips of a protein shake and some Gatorade and pass out somewhere around 5:30a. I remember twilight sleeping with a few intense contractions thrown in. At about 6 am, I wake up and vomit a second time, although it’s mostly dry heaving. I get out of bed, and everyone is passed out. I started pacing between my bathroom and bedroom, feeling very much alone and like a cornered cat. I walk out in the living room  and check the tub and it’s ice cold. I head back to my bathroom (which felt like my haven at this point) and debated with myself what to do.  I finally tried to wake up Michael (which took some raised voice and wall-banging) and told him I needed hot water in the tub. Everyone starts rushing around to get the pool ready and I start feeling grunty.  I finally hop in the tub around 6:40a and I’m starting to feel pushy. Everyone is exhausted and hungry and the kids start to wake up one by one.  I remember they all started discussing getting McDonald’s for breakfast and taking orders and I told them “I love ya’ll, but shut up about the food” because it was making me nauseas again.  I remember I started to feel pushy and a little out of control. I was feeling like she really wasn’t moving out though.  My water still hadn’t broken at this point. I was willing for my water to break (a sign that she really was coming.)  I remember warring with myself in my mind… “Don’t push too hard you might poop!” “Who cares if you poop?!  You’re giving birth!” “You need to push Sarah!” “No this contraction doesn’t feel right! This one needs to be over!”  This particular birth pool didn’t have any handles which I’d never dealt with before. I wasn’t sure what to do with my hands. Instinctively I reached down and felt her head crowning. I said “Oh there you are baby!” My spirit was renewed! I began pushing in earnest with my body and felt a resounding POP! (my water breaking)  It was evidently audible and everyone noticed.  I used my hands to help support and encourage her head out.   3 minutes later out came her head… face up! My sunny side up baby was born into her daddy’s hands at 7:40 am.  She is absolutely gorgeous and perfect.  She was covered in thick vernix with a head full of black curly hair. I now see the similarities in Austin’s birth and Laurelyn’s. They both were sunny side up and took a few days to get going.

After basking in the glow, I felt my placenta come out. Debbie asked if Michael was ready to cut the cord and I looked over and asked him if he would mind letting Trish cut it. He smiled and relinquished the scissor to a very shocked Trish. Once cut, Debbie scooped up my placenta in a bowl and set it next to the pool. Once I felt ready to get out of the water, I passed Laurelyn to Michael and took my time getting up. It always feels like the weight of the world is on you after birth. Everything heads for the floor. I managed to get one leg over the side of the pool, straddling the chux pad Debbie had ready for my trek to the bedroom.  So Debbie helps me over the side of the pool and then *SPLAT*

“I just squished my placenta.” Yeah…thankfully it was ok!

We are so blessed to have had the awesome birthing experience yet again. I’m glad that my final birth was so eventful (albeit long!) I can look back and cherish every minute of it and have pictures and videos to share with Laurelyn when she is older.

Oh goodness.  That was a LONG labor!  I feel for you.  I had a similar story--except that broken waters and meconium made the situation a little less flexible for me.  I am glad that although everyone was exhausted and a bit frustrated, that people were so calm about things!  And isn't it so true that the end is worth it all!  So glad that you are thankful for the long labor.  It happened to the right mama!  Congrats again!
