I know that the 'rules' don't require 2 spaces, anymore, but when you type an email, on a message board, or write a paper in word - do you space once or twice after periods? I can't break myself from doing two, for some reason, even though I know it's not necessary. Even as I typed this, it's just what I'm used to, I guess.

How about you? I took a college writing course last semester and all my essays were written with 2 spaces after each periods - and my instructor didn't complain, so maybe it's still acceptable? Should I try harder to only space once for future classes?

Random question, I know.

I always do 2. I guess just because I was taught that way and it looks funny with one space.

When I typed dh's English papers, I used 2 spaces and his instructors never said a word.

I still use 2, even though I know only 1 is preferred now. I've never been called on it, and I've published in journals and other places where formatting is pretty tightly controlled.

I'm sure when the dinosaurs like me who learned to "keyboard" on typewriters die out, the tolerance for these old conventions will die too.

I did two and then do a find/replace all on it if I had an instructor that cared.

Find and replace is a great idea - thanks! I'm going to take a more advanced writing course at some point, so I'll have to remember that.

I almost always do two. I even go back and add spaces if I think I only added one.

2 please! And yes to find & replace, that is a nifty tool when terms decide to change :eyeroll

The guidelines we follow at my (editing) job dictate that we do two spaces after a period, so at work I do two, but on message boards, e-mails, etc. I do one.

Good to know others do two, too.

I'm typing on my iPhone right now and if I space twice it automatically puts in a period for me, which is cool b/c punctuation requires switching to the other keyboard. You'd think if it was a no-no that word processors would change it when you spell/grammar check.

1. 1 space. 2 drives me nuts- I don't need to take up extra paper with hundreds of extra spaces over the length of a term paper/other long written work!

Also, I am 26 and although 2 spaces were mentioned in school, they were never required.

I learned to do two and can't break the habit. I'm 25, did very well in HS english, and never once heard anything about only using one.

Ah - see there's the generation gap !

It occurs to me that this would make a great clue in a CSI-type show episode. A Baby Boomer/Gen X who learned on a typewriter masquerades as a Gen Y or Z who has never seen a typewriter, except perhaps in a living museum exhibit. The double space after the period gives it all away.

See, I'm 30 and we had computers at school since kindergarten (loved Oregon Trail!), so I didn't learn to type using a typewriter - but I recall being taught to space twice. I've just never broke the habit, and sometimes one space looks really squashed to me.

Drat. There goes my clever forensics plot. Maybe it's a regional thing too? Or just the persistence of dinosaur habits living on in special places.

Well, maybe it's because I never went to college/university? high school is not always the most up to date place to learn things I guess!

I've always used one and I'm, well, old enough to have a 17 year old daughter... but I might use the find and replace thing to chance to two when I'm writing papers that should be longer...

One. We just had a discussion/argument at work about this. I don't get why (when it's not the rule anymore) anyone would want to waste time, energy and paper? That's adds up to a lot of extra keystrokes for no reason. And maybe it's just my eyes, but I can never tell when anyone is using two vs. one. It all looks the same to me.

I loved Oregon Trail, too! I'm 32 and one or two periods was never brought up in junior high, high school or college for me.

I dunno. My high schooler is learning all sorts of fantastic stuff in his film and media class. He's using computer editing software to create all sorts of stuff. I think that's why I feel like such a dinosaur .

Especially because I can't give up things like 2 spaces after a period .
