I'd love to start walking outside with my baby but we live in Texas and it gets pretty hot. It's 85 degrees by 11 am and reaches 100 in the afternoons.

Do you think it would be okay to take him ofr a stroll as long as we are back by 11? what would you consider maximum temp you would expose a child this age to?

When DS was 3 months we had to spend a day outside in 85 degree weather all day, in the shade of course. He was a little pink by the end but that faded fast. I fed him frequently to avoid dehydration and kept wetting his hair with water. He was just fine. I'd say it would be nice for you two to take a walk in the "cool"est part of the day, just keep in the shade and if you're out for long, feed the baby.

Soon after that we went on a road trip through the desert, he was out in 100 degree heat but never more than 5 minutes.

DS was born last year in the middle of a heat wave (90-100 every day with the midwest mug). Within a few days we were out walking for about an hour a day. Often we would stroll down to the coffee shop or the corner store a couple times a day. I just kept DS in a diaper only in the sling. If we were out long enough for him to wake up I fed him so he would stay hydrated.

Babies have been being carried around in the heat for a long time before AC was invented. We actually had the AC at about 80 or so to minimize the shock, which I think is worse than the heat. Your babe will be fine.

I have a babe about the age of yours and I worry too. I just keep him nursed and in a mei tai under a light covering.

I agree that babes have been in heat for a looooong time, but the elderly, pregnant mamas, and young babies are the most at risk in extreme temps.

I get nervous, but we can't just stay shut up in a/c.

Im in houston, so I totally understand your concerns!!! DD was born in the early summer so we were out in the heat some, but tried to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. Now at 14 months, she wants to be outside ALL THE TIME, no matter the temperature. Mama likes her AC though, so we are only really out before noon or after 6. If you are comfortable being out, go for it, but keep an eye out for the warning signs in baby: irritability, being very red, not sweating at all. Nurse alot, drink lots of water yourself, maybe a wet washcloth to wipe baby down periodically. Basically, use common sense. Congrats on your summer baby!

I brought Matt out to Busch Gardens VA last week. Had to be about 90, but we kept going into air conditioned places until it got dark.

The best I can suggest is 1- Sunscreen, even at 11 weeks, just WASH IT OFF when you get home. 2- try to stay in shady areas. 3- carry a wet washcloth or diposable wipes if you need to. 4- Carry baby often so you can assess if he's too hot plus my babe is a head sweating boy and needs to air out.

Good luck and have fun!
