sigh. DS (30 months) has decided that he needes a Spiderman bike for Christmas. I have no idea where he got the idea, it really came out of no where- but he has been talking about it non-stop for a couple of weeks now. He really does want a 12-inch bike (with training wheels) that he saw at one of the big-box stores. We let him sit on it, and he actually does fit the bike, but is clueless as to how to actually ride it
I think that we should buy a trike or big wheel instead - seems a little more age appropriate- but thought I'd get some of your opinions too! Please share your expereince...
Thanks!

probably is best to start with a tricycle...radioflyer makes one that has a push handle for you to use as your lo learns. We were looking at it for next year around the time he's 2.5 or 3. DS (almost 2) loves to sit on big bikes (or as he calls them "mogogycles!") but can't do the things he needs to on them...

Toys R Us had them on sale this week...here's what they have on their site...I think the flyer had a sale price for the one I'm describing though...

this one looks cool and seems to be on sale:

My kids are all on the small side, and at that age none of them have been able to reach the pedals on a trike. So with my 2nd child, I brought her to a bike store and he actually recommended a 12 inch bike for her instead of a trike and she had no problem fitting on to that. So that is what I have done since, and will probably do the same with my current toddler when he is ready. They were all riding their bikes (with training wheels) within a few days without a problem.

Thanks for all of the suggestions- I will look into them!

I am also relieved to hear that it is indeed possible for a kiddo this young being able to ride a bike. I have had similar experience- in that he cant quite reach the peddles on the trikes and big wheels that we have tried out, but he was fine when he was on the bike... i was just worried about the balance factor. Maybe with the training wheels I shouldn't worry so much.

We got DS a Radio Flyer 10" bike for his birthday last week and he was riding it by that night. He can ride it all over now. Oh, and he just turned 2. He has a harder time riding his trike.

Now my DD, who is 6.... she still can't ride a bike

My DS started riding a big wheel type around 2 years. For his birthday this year he really wanted a "big boy bike" so we got a two wheeler with training wheels. I would definitely recommend a three wheeler first while you son learns about steering and pedalling. They're not as fast and definitely not as easy to tip over. The biggest learning curve my son had between the two is that the three wheeler had the pedals in front while the "real" bike had them underneath the seat. Took a few tries but then he was off... with me running like crazy behind him. LOL
