My 12 yo ds has been at 99lbs for a while now. He's 62 3/4 inches tall. Since he shed his baby fat as a preschooler, he has never been out of his normal weight range, and has always been slim, but not skinny.
We all got the flu in March, and all three of the kids had some weight loss. My dd1 lost 8lbs. The doctor told me as long as she gained it back right away not to worry. She's a slim and tall too. She gained back the weight and is fine.
I've noticed that my son is not looking slim, but skinny now. He eats so much food every day, and when he was sick with the flu, I was lucky to get him to drink some water or herbal tea. Every once in a while he would take 1 bite of food, then refuse the rest. He was sick for 12 days. He lost 8lbs while sick, and now almost 1 month later he has not gained it back. He has to eat nearly constantly to keep up with his rate of growth. He is eating constantly, but how will he get that 8lbs back, and continue to gain weight? He has to gain weight often to keep up with his soaring height.
I've never been worried about his weight before. I'm not even worried about his health, because he is a very active kid, and when he plays sports outside he really gives it his all. He's very quick mentally, so this isn't affecting his daily living, but now several people have also noticed the weight loss.
We are veg, but not vegan. I talked to him and asked that he try to take 1 more serving than he is used to taking, if he can eat more, to try to gain back the weight. Should I just allow nature to take care of this? Do I have a reason to be concerned about this weight loss? I serve calorie dense foods like legumes with rice and veggies, pasta with white beans, black bean soups, bean and potato soups, and plenty of fresh veggies like carrots, salads, tomatoes ect. Also, they can snack on apples and oranges, roasted almonds and pretzels any time they want. They all drink milk every day, and whole milk as a matter of fact. We have fruit smoothies on a regular basis, which are always chocked full of good things including flax seed (ground), oatmeal flour, sometimes tofu, always bananas, blueberries, spinach, some type of juice like apple or orange.
They eat caloric dense breakfasts like oatmeal, (we never eat boxed cereal), blueberry whole wheat pancakes, banana blueberry oatmeal muffins (just froze about 18 of them today to eat later for breakfasts or snacks. We eat eggs and toast once a week. Even the muffins and pancakes have eggs in them.
I use olive oil and canola oil to cook our foods. I also include ghee in Indian dishes. I use milk and eggs in lots of baked goods. I just don't get it, why he hasn't gained back the weight.
Anyway, since we don't eat meat, I'd appreciate responses that don't include, "Give the boy a steak!", type posts.
