After years of chasing the newest beauty trends, I learned one thing: Mother Nature has already provided me with everything I need to be my best self.

The beauty industry makes a lot of promises: This 100% natural lotion, with a list of unpronounceable ingredients, will erase your stretch marks! This magic serum, extracted from the tears of Amazon's rare unicorn species, will eliminate your wrinkles! This night-time moisturizer, endorsed by Kim K herself, will give your face the same glow as her Instagram-filtered photos!

As ridiculous as these claims are, most of us will fall for them at some point in our lives. Lord knows I have - time and time again.

After blowing paycheques on the latest and greatest trends in Sephora's best-selling beauty and anti-aging aisles, I realized the products all did the same thing for my skin. The most expensive night creams were not necessarily the best, and all the products contained ingredients that I could barely pronounce, let alone recognize. I often got stubborn whiteheads from the thicker night creams and rashes from the exfoliating serums. Beauty consultants met my complaints with assurances that my skin would "get used to it."

But I didn't want my skin to get "used to" harsh chemicals.

So I started experimenting with natural beauty ingredients.

One month in, I was getting compliments on my glowing skin from friends, family, and co-workers - sometimes even strangers. Four years in and I have virtually no breakouts and my skin is never dry. Those fine lines on my forehead have faded. My greys are still coming in hot, but I look and feel better than ever.

1. Rosehip Oil

If I had to choose one single product for my face, it would be rosehip oil.

It's been part of my regular skincare routine for the last couple years, and it keeps my skin looking fresh and clear of fine lines. I gently massage a couple drops onto my face every night and on days that I'm not wearing any makeup, I apply it throughout the day. It's less greasy than most oils (including coconut) and the skin absorbs it quickly.

Extracted from the seeds of wild rose bushes in the Southern Andes, this stuff is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and essential fatty acids that work to hydrate dry skin, reduce fine lines and scars, and erase dark spots. It's known to regenerate tissue and repair damage caused by sun exposure and acne.

I'm not the only one raving about rosehip oil's incredible effects. Dermatologists have been recommending it for years and Native Americans have been using it on their skin for generations. And if I still haven't convinced you, maybe some of these celebrities can - Miranda Kerr, Kate Middleton, Victoria Beckham, and Gwyneth Paltrow are well-known advocates of this magic liquid gold.

  • Should be a deep golden color (the lighter the oil, the more processed it is)

2. Pomegranate Seed Oil

This is a recent discovery of mine and I thank my lucky stars for getting my hands on it when I did (in my late 20s).

As a self-proclaimed sun worshipper who skimped on sunscreen in my teen years and 20s, pomegranate seed oil has been a godsend. Aside from using a strong natural SPF sunscreen when I'm out in the sun, I also add pomegranate seed oil to my summertime skin routine. I apply a couple drops on my face every morning and make face masks face masks with it on a weekly basis.

Pomegranate seed oil is known to shield the skin from free radicals and UV damage, and the Vitamin C component helps reverse the damage caused by sun exposure. It also encourages the production of collagen and elastin and helps reduce the signs of premature aging.

Cultivated since ancient times in Iran, pomegranate seed oil is the main ingredient in many fancy anti-aging products you'll find in drugs stores and beauty boutiques. More incredibly, it has been proven to help protect the skin from cancer because of its ellagic acid, a polyphenol antioxidant that has been scientifically proven to inhibit the growth of skin tumors.

And it's not just for the face: it can treat dry hair and scalp.

3. Coconut Oil

If I didn't include coconut oil in my list, I know I would hear about it from our readers. And who can blame you? This stuff has its reputation for a reason:
  • Moisturizes skin and reduces symptoms of eczema
  • Protects hair against damage
  • Gets rid of harmful bacteria in the mouth through oil pulling
  • Its consumption can raise the good HDL cholesterol, boost brain function, reduce hunger, and increase fat burning
You can use coconut oil as your main skin (body, face, cuticles) moisturizer. Personally, I found that my skin didn't absorb it as well as it absorbs rosehip oil - it often left my face with stubborn whiteheads. That said, I still use coconut oil on my cuticles and as my main makeup remover. I also use it as a hair mask once a month (leave it in my hair for a few hours) and I try to oil pull with it every night. Coconut oil is also the main ingredient in many of my natural face masks because it makes for a good carrier.

I have two jars of coconut oil in my house - one for the bathroom and one for the kitchen. The one in the bathroom is used for beauty (skin, hair, and oil pulling), and the one in the kitchen is used for cooking and baking.

  • Cold-pressed
  • Unrefined (virgin)
  • Coconut oil should be solid at room temperature

4. Tea Tree Oil

This stuff saved me during my teen years when breakouts were a common occurrence, and although I use it less frequently now, I might include a few drops in a face mask if I'm breaking out.

Derived from Australia's native plant Melaleuca Alternifolia, tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which explains why it's a recommended remedy for toenail fungus, yeast infections, and dandruff. It is often used to treat inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, and also helps fight acne.

Tea tree oil is a common ingredient in many skincare products and even cleaning supplies as it kills different types of viruses, bacteria, and fungi without being too harsh.

You can use tea tree oil directly on your pimples or you can dilute it and mix it in with other ingredients to create face masks, washes, and moisturizers. It can dry out your skin so do not apply it all over your face without diluting it first.

When buying tea tree oil, look for:
  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Find out the percentage of Terpinen 4 OL (the higher the percentage, the stronger the antiseptic agent). Usually, this ranges from 10-45%, so you need to figure out what works for you. 45% may be too strong for people with sensitive skin.
  • Make sure it comes in a dark brown glass bottle (less likely to oxidize)
What I buy:

Majestic Pure Tea Tree Essential Oil --> this one has Terpinen 4 OL 45%, which is strong. I apply it directly to pimples. If I wanted to use this on my entire face, I would dilute it with a carrier like a coconut oil.

5. Rose Water

I am obsessed with rose water. I have one bottle in my purse; one in my office; and one in the fridge at home.

I used to spend my summer vacations with my grandmother, who had beautiful rose bushes in her garden and would use the rose petals to make jams, cookies, and of course, rose water. Aside from bringing back warm childhood memories, rose water helps me fight off acne, reduce puffiness, slow down visible aging, and tone my skin.

Bonus: it's super refreshing. When the hours seem to be dragging at work (sorry, boss) I spray my face with some rose water and feel instantly revived.

When buying rose water, look for:
  • USDA Certified Organic
  • Go for the one in the spray bottle
  • Make sure it's alcohol-free
  • It should be transparent in color - avoid the pretty pink ones
  • Make sure it says "distilled"
  • The ingredient list should only say rose water or water

6. Aloe Vera Gel

This tropical succulent is famous for its healing properties, especially when it comes to healing sunburns. Aloe vera always saves the day after a sunny afternoon at the beach or pool, and it's the main ingredient in most drugstore after-sun creams.

Other than being soothing, the natural aloe vera gel from the leaf is reported to have antioxidant properties and is used to help repair sun damage and even protect from skin damage after radiation therapy. Its also been reported to help heal wounds from second-degree burns.

  • make sure the ingredient list does not include "alcohol"
  • it should be a very light golden color - it should not be green

7. Turmeric Powder

This has been in my diet for 15 years. I mix turmeric powder in smoothies, oatmeal, and rice. Lately, I've been making Organic Traditions Turmeric Latte every morning.

Turmeric's main active ingredient is Curcumin. Science proves that curcumin is a strong antioxidant with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Curcumin blocks free radicals, boosts brain function, and lowers the risk of brain and heart disease. It's used to treat Alzheimer's, Arthritis pain, and even Depression. Studies have proven that it may even reduce the growth of cancerous cells.

That said, turmeric does not contain a very high curcumin content - not high enough to get all of the curcumin's incredible benefits - that's why they sell Curcumin supplements.

But turmeric's awesome benefits are not just limited to its ingestion. You can use it externally too. Since it's high in antioxidants, it slows down the damage of cell. Its anti-inflammatory properties fight fine lines, redness, uneven skin tone, and acne.

You can include turmeric in your homemade face mask formulas, and you can use it to whiten your teeth.

8. Bentonite Clay

I'm always stocked up on Bentonite Clay because I use it for some of my face masks (it's a healing clay).

Famous for its healing properties, Bentonite clay is made of aged volcanic ash - the largest known deposit of this clay is in Fort Benton, Montana (hence the name). Bentonite clay is a common ingredient in cleaning products because it absorbs and removes toxins, chemicals, and impurities. That's why it's so great when used in facial masks.

You can also use Bentonite clay in a bath, to detox your armpits, to battle mastitis, and more.

  • should be grey or cream color
  • natural calcium Bentonite clay source
  • have a pH of 8.7 (or higher)

9. Magic Mud Tooth Powder

I was once devoted to my Colgate whitening strips, but after using My Magic Mud for two weeks, I gave my leftover strips to a friend and vowed to only use Magic Mud moving forward.

Firstly, this stuff is so much fun (if you don't mind the mess). Secondly, it actually works!

While most drugstore teeth whiteners strip your enamel and harm your gums, Magic Mud whitens your teeth without causing any harm to your teeth or gums. Its high pH level kills bacteria that cause cavities while helping your breath stay fresh.

10. Sugar

The sugar in my house is only used externally (unless I'm baking a cake).

Sugar is a great exfoliator and contains glycolic acid, which encourages cell turnover, giving your skin a youthful glow. You can mix it with water, coconut oil, honey, and more. I use sugar and water to exfoliate my skin (face and body) in the shower, and I also mix it with other ingredients to create face masks.

You don't have to go out of your way to buy sugar specifically for external use. You can use what you have! I always go the organic route, and I like using white, granulated sugar externally.

11. Epsom Salt

There's nothing more relaxing than taking a long, hot bath filled with Epsom salts.

Discovered in the 17th century, Epson salt is a mineral compound also known as magnesium sulfate.

When you're exhausted after a 12-hour work day, take an Epsom salt bath. When your muscles ache from a full body workout, take an Epsom salt bath. Stressed? Headache? Abdominal cramps? Joint inflammation? Take an Epsom salt bath.

When you soak in an Epsom salt bath, you are improving your body's circulation by decreasing inflammation. This results in lower blood pressure and better cardiovascular health.

You can also rub Epsom salts directly on your wet skin to exfoliate. Personally, I love using this on my feet, knees, and elbows at it exfoliates the rough areas better than sugar.

12. Loose Leaf Chamomile

Whenever I had a cold, my mom would place loose leaf chamomile tea into a large bowl of boiling water and let it steep for a few minutes. She'd then drape a towel over my head and the bowl, and I'd have to sit still for five to ten minutes with the steam in my face. Not only did this home remedy clear my sinuses, it felt so relaxing.

Steaming with chamomile isn't just great for sinuses - it's good for your skin too. It relaxes your facial muscles, clears your pores, softens your skin, and leaves you glowing.

Whether you're drinking a cup of chamomile before bed (induces sleep) or using it to pamper your skin, the absolute best way to enjoy its benefits is when you purchase loose leaf chamomile tea.

13. Matcha Tea

You might want to consider swapping your morning coffee with a matcha latte.

A staple in Japanese culture for centuries, Matcha green tea is a nutrient-rich superfood with a myriad of health benefits. High in antioxidants, Matcha helps prevent premature aging and cell degeneration. It also detoxifies the body, boosts memory and concentration, improves cholesterol, increases energy, and helps with weight loss.

You can enjoy matcha in many ways - add it to your morning smoothie, make a matcha latte with almond milk, mix it with water, make matcha popsicles (click here to check out our easy recipe), or use it in various deserts. A quick Google search proves that your Matcha recipe options are endless.

14. Collagen Powder

Collagen powder is super hot right now, and for good reason. This high protein white powder, derived from the connective tissue of cows or fish, delivers lots of protein while improving gut health, supporting skin elasticity, and soothing aching joints - oh, and it also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

A structural protein made of amino acids, collagen keeps tissues and cells together. As we age, our body produces less collagen. 1/3 of the protein in our bodies comes from collagen, and it makes up 70% of the protein in our skin. Despite making an appearance in a lot of skin products, collagen molecules are actually too big to be absorbed by the skin. That's why it's better to ingest it.

Collagen powder has no taste, so you can mix it into your coffee or morning smoothie.

  • hydrolized (easier to absorb)
  • source (I look for grass-fed cows)
  • should be rBGH & BSE-free (no hormones or antibiotics)

15. Water

If you want healthy, dewy skin, start drinking more water.

This is a no-brainer. Skin is the largest organ in your body, and water keeps it hydrated. Water helps your body eliminate waste, keeps your skin glowing, protects your tissues, lubricates your joints, and maintains normal body temperature.

Depending on your height and weight, you may need to drink between 8-12 cups a day.
