I had ordered a trial run of cloth diapers from Jillian's drawers and today was the first day I've had a chance to use them. Overall it went well, but I had a few things I wasn't sure about. First of all, poop. My ds (who is 20-months-old) has very loose bowels. He never has one of those nicely formed chunks that neatly can be tossed into the toilet! So today when he pooped, he had his usual blob in there. It surprisingly fell off the diaper (it was a bum genius pocket, I believe) quite easily but I wasn't sure how thorough I was supposed to be about it. There were still blotches of poop on there, but no massive chunks or anything. How clean is it supposed to be before it's OK to just toss in the diaper pail? And do I need to wet it to prevent stains or is it OK to just toss it in if most of the poop comes off?

Also, I cannot figure out prefolds for the life of me! I tried to snappi one on and it did not work! I don't even know if I"m doing it right. Here's what I did -I laid it flat under my ds with the back of it at belly button level. Then, I trifolded the part that was by his legs and brought that part up to his belly button. It was super long so I had to fold it down (I actually did that part first - after I put it flat under him, I folded the part closest to his feet up so that it would be at belly button level when I brought it up). So, after I brought it up to his belly, I tried to pull the part from behind his back across his side to the front and snappi it in but it didnt' seem like it reached around enough. There just wasn't enough to bring around and when I tried, the snappi got all crooked from me getting it hooked on one side but then not reaching the other side. And it also wasn't at all snug around the legs. Anything would have fallen out of there! The whole thing just seemed like it wasn't wide enough but was too long! I'm not sure what size they sent me. It's about 20 inches long and 13 inches wide. My ds is very little for his age. He's about 30inches and 21 pounds. What am I doing wrong with the snappi?

So, since the snappi didn't work, I tried just trifolding it within my cover. That worked OK, but again, it was just so long that I had to fold it up which made it very bulky (it was 6 layers in the front!) and uncomfortable for my son. Do I need a different size prefold or am I just doing something wrong or will it just take my ds some adjusting to the bulkier diaper (he also didnt' like the pocket diaper for the first 5 minutes but after that, he was fine with all of them).

Thanks!

I throw a little bit of poo on the diapers in the pail/washer, just do a cold prerinse at the start of washing them- no big deal.

I prefer the binkini twist on toddlers for a prefold. And for trifolding- fold it the other way, instead of folding the length, fold the width. Practice the snappy on a teddy bear, is my best advice for it, a wiggling toddler makes it harder. I usually skip the snappy myself.

Prefolds are notorious for being too long and not wide enough. I fold down the diaper in back before putting it on her in order to make it shorter. For width, I'm not sure if maybe size is the issue? My dd outgrew infant prefolds around the waist at 6 weeks, but she can still wear regulars at 25 months (although they are no longer absorbent enough for her).

What size prefold do you have? DS doesn't fit in the regulars width-wise. He fits in the greenmountaindiapers brown edge though.

The ones that came with my trial pack are green earth textile prefolds. I think they are the premium size. I had planned to try out prefolds with my ds and my new baby (arriving in May) and was going to get the green mountain ones. Comparing their sizes to the one I have the green mountain look much better - not as long and yet wider. I'm guessing that would make a difference?

I use pockets, and I just let the poo fall off. Whatever comes off, fine. Anything else goes in the pail. I DO NOT dunk, scrape, or spray. I have never had a stain. I just do a cold rinse and lots of hot washes.

For what its worth we use pins more than snappis when we use prefolds. Although at this point that is hardly ever (since I discovered the joy of cheap used fitteds...). Either way, it took us al ot of practice and we started before ds moved around a lot.
Oh, and a little poo residue in the wash is normal as far as I'm concerned.

I'm also new to this and this pic tutorial helped me figure out how to get a nice tight fold with a prefold and a snappi.

http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/...d.php?t=173216

there are some videos out there on snappi-ing a prefold--here's one. It helped me to see it being done when I got started.

I also fold my prefold down in the back, it seems trimmer that way to me. I also prefer the 4x6x4 prefolds--if I need extra absorbancy, I use a small hemp doubler.

One more thing, and this may just be my baby and her extra icky poo , but I have to rinse poopy diapers and wash within a day, or my dipes reek, even after washing.

I received a lot of good advice a few weeks back. You should check out what the mamas said...
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=780996

I'm new too. So glad I switched! PF's take some time. Time I don't feel like spending: I will use them in a pinch tho. And I used them when he had a rash. But otherwise I'm sticking with pockets.

I thought I would love the paper liners, turns out I love the minishower. If I feel like getting all the poop off that is

I do think it takes them a day or two to get used to the CD persoanlly. My DS is 18 mo and we just started 2 weeks ago.'

Good Luck!!
