Any home rememdis? I have them in the bathroom with the vaporizer on. Can i give them something to help the cough? They are all on antibiotics (was ampicillian now clavamox) whih i know only helps fight off secondary conditions but these poor babes just spent the past 2 weeks before me in a shelter so everything they were exposed to is now at its incubation period. This just sucks ,.... i am exhausted ...

Don't give them anything to suppress the cough. This is what can lead to pneumonia which is really the only concern with kennel cough. I just had it in my house. It sounded like a smoker's convention in my living room. All four dogs (my three and Whisper) got it. I think mine picked it up at the dog park. It ran it's course in about a week. They really need to do all that coughing to make sure that the icky stuff doesn't settle in their lungs. Just watch for high fevers. Other than that, kennel cough doesn't require much attention. The only reason the vets give antibiotics is to help fight off secondary infection, such as pneumonia, that most likely won't occur. Being that the KC is viral, the antibiotics don't do anything for it. I know you're exhausted, mama! But it will all run it's course. I promise!!! They sound horrible but it really is the equivalent of the human cold.<br><br>

Poor babies!! See, now this is what I was just talking about in another thread...that I want to take all shelter dogs home with me...darn internet. Thank goodness you are in FL, Melda, or I'd be knocking on your door to take those pups home with me!! I saw the pics on your other thread and they are <i>gorgeous</i>!!<br><br>
I had a bout of kennel cough go through my house last year. The vet prescribed antibiotics, but I didn't give them. I waited to see if anything else developed, but other than having an annoying cough, the pups felt fine and didn't run a fever. They also offered cough suppressants, which I declined (for the same reasons Danemom mentioned). I did, however, dose them all up on Vitamin C. Not sure if it helped, but I figured it couldn't hurt.<br><br>
It sounds a lot worse than it is (I remember feeling so horrible for my pups!), but they will get over it!! Hang in there, you are doing a great job with these guys!
