X post on the CBE/Midwife/Doula sort of...

Anyone know if it is possible/safe to do a homebirth if you only have a 2v umbilical cord? My DX has not be confirmed, but I saw the tech's notes as she wrote them out, and the pics on the US where she put 2V Cord...

I was going to use a birthing center, but I doubt I am eligible now as a result, because of the potential complications with the baby at birth.

I would normally call the birth center and ask, but I am afraid to do that because I haven't official been told that I only have a 2V cord and don't want to get the tech in trouble...it is not like she can hide her notes/comments on the US pics. I know how to decifer some of them, because of being an attorney and have some knowledge of stuff to do PI cases.

One of my twins was said to have a 2 vessel cord. The midwives were not concerned after u/s ruled out any abnormalities. After the birth we checked both cords and all 4 midwives agreed that neither appeared to be missing a vessel. I had at least 6 or 8 u/s during my pregnancy which "confirmed" that it was in fact a single umbilical artery. Who knows what happened? LOL Anyway, NO I do not think you will have any problems. Most of the complications that could go along with a SUA are due to various birth defects, mostly heart defects. If nothing shows up on u/s you can be fairly certain that there is nothing wrong. I don't know all that much about it, but a good friend of mine had a baby with a 2v cord. He was born just fine and did not need any immediate care, but his esophogus was not conected to his stomach. They did not find out until he tried to nurse and was gagging and spitting it back out. I don't mean to worry you at all, I am sure everything will be fine with you baby. She easily could have had a safe hb but would have had to go to the hospital eventually. gotta go, baby awake

If you do have any problems, then they would have to tell you about them. Perhaps you could call and ask if the U/S results were in and how they turned out. Maybe you were just reading the notes wrong.

In any event. You have the right to know if there is any problems. If or when you find there is a problem you can begin to look for your solutions. Until that time, try to relax. I know, not easy! But worrying is not going change anything, and it could all be for nothing.

IF it turns out to really be a 2 vessel cord, they will look for all the usual defects. There is a high likelyhood of no problmes.

On the pics of the US (including ones using color dopplar) it clearly states 2V CI. Also, when she was entering the information afterwards, it specifically asked if a 3V Cord was present and she put down No, or 2V.

Our OB/Midwife office puts your US pics/scans on CD for you, and it is all the pics/scans done during the US, including the ones for the OB.
