My sister got me 5 yds of this great gauze, and now I'm trying to figure out whether to hem it as is (45") or cut it down to 30"-ish. I tried it on, and it just felt like waaaaay too much fabric, especially for the sticky summer. If I were smart and had an iota of patience, I'd wait until the baby's arrival and see what I liked then. But since I'm not and I don't, and I'm worried that I just won't get around to it post-baby, please give me your $.02.

Does it depend on your frame (I'm shorter and not so big), or on personal preference, or some of both?

TIA!

Well, I personally make them 24" wide and that is wide enough for me to do all carries (back, even) with both my boys. I don't want a bunch of extra fabric hanging around. :LOL

But I know many people prefer them wider.

Just my .02.

Nabbis, you should ask over at TBW in the DIY forum if you haven't already.

I like them narrower as well. Even though gauze wraps are usually wider than heavier woven wraps I think 30"-36" is a good place to start and you can always cut it down later if you want it narrower.
Shalena, where did you get your fabric? Did you just go to the craft store and buy it? I want a gauze wrap if I can make it for cheap!

Another vote for 30 inches or just under. I carry a 19 mos old, 24 lbs, 32 inches. I do all carries, including backcarries, easily with this width. I have a wider wrap (saree) but it is a little more cumbersome.

Enjoy your new carrier!

I just saw some really nice gauze at JoAnns-it was about $6-8 I think but they always have 40% off coupons.

I have found some decent gauze on the clearance racks at Wal-mart but some is too thin and some is patterned and not very soft. I've only found good gauze there once.

Cool, thanks. I don't really know what I am looking for though, maybe I'll see you at the next diaper meeting or babywearing meeting?
