Our 4-month old DD has always been a calm, mellow sleeper. She sleeps well at night and takes pretty good naps.

But, over the last week or so, she's begun screaming everytime she wakes. We aren't able to calm her for several minutes, which just breaks my heart.

We co-sleep both at night and for naps, so either DH or I are always with her when she wakes. I cut dairy out of my diet months ago, so that's not it. And, I don't feel any teeth yet.

Is this a developmental thing? Or should we be concerned that something is really wrong?

Thanks for any insight!

I was just coming to post a similar question. In the past when DS (5.5 months) would wake screaming it ALWAYS indicated teeth. He would never wake crying, just rooting.
The past week he has been waking crying EVERY time he wakes. Now, I acknowledge that it *could* be teeth again, but I haven't really seen any evidence (and believe me, I'm looking).

He's also going through a phase (I pray it's a phase) where he is having a hard time sleeping. He is SOOOO tired, but refuses to sleep. I think it's a developmental thing, he's rolling, close to crawling, so excited about the world around him... So his naps are totally off and he's only sleeping a short nighttime stretch (of course he is waking a billion times to eat, too
) and I think he is only getting about 11 hours of sleep a day. Not nearly enough for him, because he's showing all of the signs of exhaustion. Will he outgrow this?

And what about the crying when waking? Any mamas have some advice for us?

I posted about this in Life with a Babe and never got a good answer. Perhaps someone will help here. Jett has been doing this for a while now and I feel terrible.

My son did this and still goes through phases of this. I think it's early teething (like they're still under the gums, maybe even with months to go before they poke through). Since teething is supposed to be more painful or noticeable to them at night, it made sense.

Have you tried Hylands teething tablets yet?
