Read the story about the woman kicked out of a Denton, TX salon, and click on the survey link to see what I'm talking about.

Incredible! 47% of those polled DO NOT believe a mom should have the right to BF where she chooses.

I don't know why I bother to read the comments to stories like these. It's amazing how ignorant some people are! :

I know! I have no idea how some of those people (in those particular comments and elsewhere) somehow think that breastfeeding in public and having sex in public are on the same level!

Does that particular area have a strong anti-breastfeeding vibe? Or is it just people coming out of the woodwork because they can leave anonymous comments?

Yeah, I don't believe it either until I read the comments on breastfeeding YouTube videos. They get very disgusting and quite a few of the videos I've seen have disabled the comments because it can get so bad. It's really unfortunate that certain people can be so disgusting and ignorant about something that is so beneficial to mankind. Some of the posters even admit that they were breastfed, too.

What's weird about youtube breastfeeding videos is what are all those folks who are against breastfeeding doing looking at breastfeeding videos?
Food for thought, eh?

I know. I wonder that, too. I think they do it just to be annoying. Like there are people who will go on music videos of bands they hate and post comments about how they suck. They have nothing else to do, so they just go around ruining things. It's pretty sad.

I voted, and "yes" is now up to 50%.

However, I personaly wouldn't have nursed in the middle of getting a haircut, in the interest of not wiggling too much and getting a crooked haircut!

They were wrong to kick her out of the store, but I don't think they were out of line for saying "I can't cut your hair while you're nursing her"- but they certainly could have been more polite about it! For example, how about offering her a seat in the waiting area until the baby is done, then finish the haircut at that point?

Wow, I replied to the first negative comment I saw and then realized their were 119 more to deal with...

I can't read these comment either; they just piss me off too much. I start to get really agitated, and unfortunately there is no way to know whether any of these commenters will ever come back to read the replies and learn anything. Most likely they will lead the rest of their lives in such ignorance.

True. I think Youtube brings out the worst in some people. It's so easy to be mean sitting behind a computer.

ETA: I wonder if some of those people understand things like nipple confusion, that some babies don't like to be covered, etc. Hmmm....

I think this is some we just need to GET OVER. In some countries women nurse in front of the Pope. Big deal.

Yes, in some circles, and our local Fox News radio station did a piece on it, but I couldn't care less what Fox News thinks about breastfeeding so I didn't listen.

It doesn't make sense to me that she would lie about it, but...

...

In a statement, Regis Corp. said it did not ask Nair to leave but "she didn't allow them to give her an alternative place to breastfeed."

If they are not going to allow her to bfeed while getting her hair cut, though, why would they possibly allow her to hold the baby while getting her hair cut? I would think that would be much more dangerous--- at least most bfeeding infants stay *lower*.

Lots of ignorance in the comments though. For the non-ignorant ones, though, I certainly wondered how many came from this site

Yes, I agree. I remember posting here a while ago about a similar set of comments regarding NIPing in Massachusetts and was quite disgusted by the reactions. Quite.

At the end of the article it reads, "Texas state law said women are allowed to breastfeed in public." What do they mean by 'said'? That is still a current law.

I just cannot BELIEVE the ignorance found in those comments! Wow. I am astounded.

I would like to think that it's better here in BC, but I could be wrong. Maybe when I have been nursing in public, there have been knuckleheads thinking mean things.

Whatever though, they can UAV themselves.

Wow! I never thought breastfeeding was such an issue (I know, naiive). Why? Is it because one might see our breastes? Amazing.
I think the only thing to do is to constantly inform and educate people: a hard road to travel I am sure.
I live in Canada where I think it is easier to breastfeed-i don't know yet? but having heard about such breastfeeding issues I never heard about before, I had to talk to my relatives in europe that this is an issue and they laughed their heads off. Lol. this is a small european country where I have sat, many, many many times on a bus or a bench next to breastfeeding women and no one would even stop to look. Why? It is normal. Someone is eating. that's it. But then again, topless is normal at the beach. It is not big deal to gasp! see some breast in any case and the 2 are different cases, I think it is here, having never seen a topless woman on the beach. I just don't get why breastfeeding is an issue. Really, I don't.

So to see breastfeeding such an issue anywhere is a HUGE shocker. I still don't get it. I guess i should get ready if someone says something to me when i will be feeding my baby-I am just not so sure I can reply calmly.
I really got sick to my stomach reading those comments on the news article. Are these people serious??? Saying that sex and breasts and breastfeeding are the same thing? That to me is a sign of a sick society or sick person. For any society disrespect children and mothers rights that way to me is going downhill very fast.
Wow. Makes me think twice about where I am living and whata world this is.
So I guess I will join this fight and try to inform people and learn about breastfeeding issue.
I should call it human rights, no?

That story does make me angry... and THAT sort of attitude in this area is exactly why I carry around a card that states Texas Law on breastfeeding and nurse in public every chance I get. No one has asked me to cover up before (except polite offerings of blankets which I equally politely refused on an American Airlines flight into Dallas) and God save the person that does .

It really is both. There is a very strong puritainical streak in the US. I would assume that in the larger cities with more mixed population (i.e., "immigrants"), it's not so much.
