our 8-10 year old male cat starts meowing loudly at 4am every day. we have tried shutting our bedroom door, but he scratches on it to be let in. if we leave the door open, he visits us in bed and meows in our face. my husband has started to feed the cats (we have two) at 5am just to give us a couple more hours sleep. i realize we shouldn't be encouraging this behavior by feeding them, but he will continue to wail unless one of us gets up or they are fed.

we co-sleep and our son is about a year old. if our son hears the cat crying, he gets upset also. you can imagine how much fun this is at 4am...

has anybody had a similar situation? any suggestions or recommendations?

Yup, been there done that. We made a cat haven out of our laundry room and our kitties stay in there at night. They have kitty condos, beds, toys, litter box, food and water. They are set. Before we decided to make them their own 'bedroom' they were racing up and down the hall all night, tearing up the house and keeping us awake while doing it. They destroyed the carpet just outside our bedroom door when we tried just shutting them out. They're only in there over night, during the day they have free run of the house and when it gets dark out they actually head for the laundry room now. They apparently know their bedtime
Seriously though, this is the only way we get any sleep.

Yes we did the same thing. Made a cat night-room out of a side room with it's own door. Otherwise the cats are in our face all night, meowing and pawing at us.

I feel your pain, LOL! We have a bunch of cats & there is ONE that is seperated at night. Our kitty Cassie goes on the attack at night, stalking the others & looking to rumble.
And it can get loud...so she is in a different room from the time I go to bed untilI get up.
