My 5 wk old hasn't had a poop in 8 days now. Typical, I know, my dd did it too. But he's passing lots of smelly gas for 4 days now and seems to be straining painfully and crying. His tummy is hard. I don't know what to do!

Here's what I've tried:
Baby's Bliss gripe water and mylicon for the gas
warm bath with infant massage (and rectal stimulation (as of last night)
bicycling legs
reflexology on his feet
I'm drinking more water and eating apples

Could there be another problem or do I need to take him to the doctor? Help, help, help!

Since his tummy is hard I would think it's not normal. I do not have a lot experience with it though so keep that in mind. Is he forcefully spitting up?

Mostly just bumping this so maybe someone who has more info will post.

I've always heard that a hard tummy is not good. My BIL is a registered nurse, and when my dd was constipated once, he told me to watch out for a hard tummy and spitting up. He said if it got to that point, it could be a bowel obstruction. I would at least call your doctor and ask. It could be nothing, or it could be something that you need to get medical attention for. Hope this helps. Wish I knew more.

If tummy is hard, I think it's time to go to the doc. Better safe than sorry.
