The 5 year old brought heroin wrapped in waxed paper stamped with smiley faces to day care. He and his siblings were placed in protective custody (with Grandma). The family says he found the heroin on the walk to day care.

I hope the authorities had evidence to the contrary before removing the children from their parents. Could you imagine? Your child finds something on the ground & CPS takes all your kids away because of it????

The only thing I'm wondering is why it wasn't noticed he picked it up. I know if my 5 year old finds something, he'd at least say something or comment on it or I would notice that he picked something up. That's the thing that stuck out to me. Then again, my kids like to show me everything they find.

ETA: What a sad, scary, strange situation. I hope they can resolve this quickly.

Sad thing is that most kids that bring drugs at school becuase they found them in their home not on the street.

I can see a 5 year old picking up something with out a parent noticing quite easily and won't rule it out. Esspecially if the mom had 2 smaller kids in tow.

I can especially see it if he thought it was candy, and isn't allowed to have it. He might not have mentioned it to his mom, because he wanted to take it to daycare and eat it.

I hope everything is resolved quickly.

Walking home from the bus stop in HS I once found a baggie of pot...I just kept walking...
A little while later, my little brother came home and pulled it and was like "look what I found on the side of the road"
:

So I defintey believe finding drug on the way to school is possible.

Hopefully it will be proven that the child didn't get it from in the home....

Gee,...that really makes TOO much sense. You are going to have to try harder.

My personal experience is that CPS thinks they are G-d and they believe that they NEVER make mistakes...CPS believes they have an absolute right to break up families without cause and ask questions later, if ever.

And they NEVER apologize.

They are always right.

UUGGGH! CPS. An average CPS worker is underpaid, undereducated and has not a clue in the world...... I've had some idiot friends who were unemployed and had no backgroud in psychology, child development or social work..... who were allowed to be CPS caseworker...... MAKE ANY SENSE???!!!!

There is a public "drug hangout" park near my kids school where I have regularly found pipes and bags of drugs hidden in the bushes, etc. Before my kids play or while they are, I usually check around and throw stuff in the trash... I do not know what kind they have been... I only know what MJ looks like..... but, my kids could easily find it before I do.

One half block from my local public school is a home that is a halfway house for recovering drug addicts. It has been used that way for over twenty years. When I was made aware of it, it was by a concerned neighbor, not the school or the city. I walked my children to and from school each day, away from that house. Later I homeschooled them. My children are now grown. No petitioning or complaining or redress has worked. It is simply terrible. Who is the child abuser in this situation? The County and City should be responsible because the city does the zoning and the county finds the homes for these people. I know that they need to go somewhere, but this is ridiculous.

Umm, but the parents didn't check the bag? I don't think it is a safe idea to let your kids eat something they find on the street. The daycare shouldn't allow kids share things without knowing where it came from.

I was watching this on the news & they said they don't know if the heroin came from the parents house, or if it came from the daycare itself.

Even if it did come from the parents, it doesn't mean they actually do it & a blood test wouldn't prove if it came from their house. There are those who sell it, but don't use it themselves.

The article said she was walking the 5-year-old boy and two 2-year-olds to daycare. I can certainly understand how she could overlook the boy picking something up. And, as I said earlier, if he thought it was candy, I can see why he might not mention it to his mom - he figured he'd scored a goodie for later.

: I don't think that was sufficient, did they search their home or something? Shouldn't they have done that before taking the kids?

Ask that to people who have found poop and bugs in their baby's mouth. C'mon! If she was walking with more than one child It is easy not to to notice. You never found something on your kid that you didn't see him pick up?
