5 yr old ds weaned! Now- breasts HURT!

699 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  kennedy444
Hello, mamas. I'm hoping for some guidance from someone who's weaned. My son has finally decided that five is it- the magical number for no more milkies. It's been eleven days! We are both adjusting pretty well (I try not to think about how much I miss it). The problem is, my breasts are really full and sore now, even after the eleven days. Any suggestions? Any idea when they'll stop hurting? Any help is greatly appreciated

Not sure how good this advice is, but it's what I did when my two DSs weaned.

I pumped some whenever I felt really uncomfortable, just enough to relieve the pressure. I know that it keeps the milk supply coming, but I was definitely pumping less milk than DS had been drinking, so the supply went down. I'm sure it took longer to dry up completely, but that just let me keep my shapely figure just a bit longer.

Good luck.

You might want to try putting cabbage leaves in your bra- it's very soothing and helps the milk dry up faster.

What a huge accomplishment!

You've already gotten the advice I would have given.

Also, I just wanted to "warn" you to look for some mood changes/hormonal shifts. They can be quite strong.

Thanks for the suggestions. After five years, I have no idea where the pump is, but at least I know it's ok to relieve some of the pressure. Cabbage leaves actually sounds pretty good! Nice and cool... And today I feel a little better.

The best to you and yours

I have read that lac caninum (a homeopathic medicine) can help dry milk. It is available in little pellets.

About those hormonal shifts/mood changes, what did you go through? My dd is 32 months and slowing down a lot and I'm wondering what it is going to be like when she stops entirely.
Sage and phyto estrogens like soy can help to dry up too.

I haven't really gone through it (DD weaned when DS was 18 months, so it was all just emotions on my part).

I have heard a lot of women do because, what would it be, their prolactin levels go down.

When I was away from home for a few days and needed relief I just hand expressed in the shower. I did just enough to relieve the fullness and to be sure not to get a plugged duct.

I'll second or third the idea of cabbage leaves too. With my ds, a lactation consultant recommended cooked leaves, then cooled, to help reduce amount of milk (I had SO much.)
