Okay, Kate reminded me that I have been lax in giving an update on our CDing. Truth is I really don't have time to read boards anymore. LOL I changed jobs when Mari came home too, and we are just so busy now. But, let me give a quick update.
- Washing. We have had no stink or build up or anything. I do a cold prewash with TTO, lavender oil, baking soda. Then I do an overnight cold soak. Then I do a hot wash with a tiny bit of Allen's Naturally followed by a warm rinse. I am washing daily, not out of necessity but originally it was because I didn't have enough nightime diapers. But, now I really like having my daily diaper laundry and no stink anywhere.
- Sizing and fit. Don't let anyone tell you that Guatemalans are typically smaller than US babies. LOL Truth is Mari was bigger than most of the other babes her age in Guatemala. She is very healthy!
She is such a chunk, and I think all her weight is between her belly button and knees. So, we've had a ton of fit problems. Lots of her custom wool doesn't fit past her knees. She can only wear side-snapping diapers. So, Liam has been selling things for me, and I've been giving some things away. The soaker and shorts that daddy made don't fit either. So, he needs to make some more!
- Buying ahead advice. I know most people start with newborn diapers, but for any other adoptive moms, I'd recommend that you don't buy much in advance. When I started buying things over a year ago, we thought we were a month away from bringing home Lily. I think that was reasonable. We didn't know we were going to lose her or that it would be nearly a full year later until we brought home Mari. I was able to get a lot of wonderful things in that time, but I also had no way of predicting that she would be so much bigger or older. I didn't expect to bring home an 8-month old.
- Diapers as my hobby. The past 18 months were one of the most painful and difficult times of our life. Well, I guess if you toss in the infertility time too, the past 4-5 years have been just dreadful. Diaper buying became a hobby for me, and apparently quite a few people decided to hate me for buying things that other people could be using even though I couldn't. But, many many more people rallied behind us and gave us a great support network during our wait. Everyone knows what side of the fence they were on and are probably well aware of how it made us feel. I just never really imagined what emotions and passion would erupt from something as seemingly innocuous as diaper buying!
I have to admit that I'm pretty much over diapering as a hobby. It was a wonderful diversion while we waited, but aside from a few outstanding special custom orders, I'm mostly just working on streamlining our stash to what works best for us.
