My nearly 6 mo old has contracted a cold along with cutting his first teeth.
His nose is stuffed and runny with greenish clear gunk nearly all day and night. Last night we awoke 8 times-- I surmise he could not breathe and awoke so I'd carry him upright at which point he's doze for a few minutes! I have tried Hylands Cold tablets to no avail. Does anyone know of any other natural/homeopathic remedies to clear up the congestion so this little guy and his family can get some much needed SLEEP????

Thank you so much!!!

My first dd got her first cold around 6mo. It was kind of a nightmare. We used one of those saline nose inhalant thingies. You basically squeeze it and it shoots salt water up the baby's nose. I also had to sleep sitting on a chair with dd sleeping on my chest. Otherwise, she'd cough so hard that she'd vomit. She didn't have the green stuff, though. That might be a sinus infection.

We run the shower hot and hang out in the steamy room to clear Ds' nose. Then we let him sleep on our chests or somehow not just flat.

I've also read on MDC that BM works as well as/better than saline to help clear noses. We've never had to resort to that.

If you wanna go natural, there's nothing you can do but the steamy shower and sleep in the rocking chair. I guess a homeopath might have some ideas but I didn't find anything that worked much. It's just hard until it's over. I focused on putting my energy into letting him know I was there for him through the hard parts of life. Did once try some horrible pediacare stuff when he was a bit older but found it just knocked him out without helping that much and i found it really scary. Rocking all night even though he didn't sleep much felt better than the meds. Just try to get someone to come by the next day while you take a nap!

My ds got a runny nose with every new tooth. I found that Traumeel, one pill 3 times a day as directed by his Naturopath, worked better than anything to clear up both the cold and to help with teething pain (and I tried A LOT of remedies!)

When my dd was sick, I found that sage tea did wonders for her congestion. I made an appt with the doc because she was screaming so much I was worried it had become an ear infection (it hadn't ... she was just miserable, lol). I gave her the sage tea about an hour before we went, and she was totally normal when we were there (no congestion or other signs of illness). The doc was scratching his head asking "why are you here again?"

This was posted by another MDC mama at one point:

Sage tea helps to break up congestion and bring down a fever. Give your child one dose of sage tea, up to three times daily, for three to five days...
Newborn to two years. One dose equals...2 or 3 teaspoons of tea. A nursing mother may also take an adult dose of the appropriate herbal treatment.
I got it at Whole Foods, I think the brand was Alvita (white box with blue). I steeped it in hot water then let it cool. Kept it in the fridge and gave it to her from a dropper or in a paci dispenser. She loved the taste too!

FYI, despite the above quote, my yoga teacher said sage can dry up bm, so I never took it even though I was utterly miserable.

When my ds was sick a month ago with a cold, cough, congestion, I used Sambucol. It's all natural, and I found it at an all-natural market. Although, my ped wouldn't tell me about it she recommended it when I asked her about it. I have a lot of friends that are vax-free, organic happy (like myself) and they highly recommended it, and it was the only thing that worked for him. I mixed about a tbs 3 times a day in his bottle, and he was all cleared up within 4-5 days. Good luck to you!
