Wow. Congratulations to the family on two healthy babies! I can't imagine enduring pregnancy at such an advanced age.

I'm glad she and the babies are safe, but the article did point out that it was a very difficult pregnancy and there was a chance she wouldn't survive. Also, the purpose was mainly to have a male heir. I hope they have enough family to help this mother raise the babies.

And to raise them once the parents are gone.

I'm glad they're okay. I have a hard time being happy about artificially inseminating and elderly woman to get a son, though.

I think all babies are a blessing but I do agree with what Cherrybomb has to say. The patriarchy in this whole thing is really disturbing to me.

What saddened me most was that the DH said "I didn't think she would survive, the in-vitro was very painfull" how horrible is that???

While I'm glad that everyone is OK so far, I'm saddened by this story- saddened that children's sex has more weight than mom's health. I'm also sad for these twins- the will never know their parents. Not truly.

How do you mean? That they will likely die before the twins are grown?

No artifical insemination or typical IVF here. This was a donor egg. No one is fertile in their 70's. The only 'pain' she went thru was the embryo transfer and the PIO shots. And the actual pregnancy, of course.

Do they think they are fooling people? If it's so important that they have a son --decades after the window has closed--why not just use a surrogate to carry the donor egg, instead of risking her health?

Sorry but I do not agree with this at all. No one should be having babies at that age and just for a son?? My heart goes out to the babies who will probably never know their parents and I would be heart broken if I ever found out the only reason I was wanted was b/c I had a penis And shame on that doctor, that is completely unethical.

Wow. More power to them! They have 5 grown daughters and several grandkids, according to the article. Hopefully, their extended family will be around to help!

So I wonder how well a five year old will pull that off

I think it's strange when people who have IVF say "God answered our prayers". Isn't science is what made it possible for them to get pregnant? I have nothing against religion or fertility treatments, I just find it odd.

That being said, good for them

Is gender selection possible? It was a gamble, for sure.
